What is Intonation?

Intonation is the rise and fall of pitches when we produce


sentences in a natural situation. Informally, intonation is the
melodic rise and fall of pitches that a human uses to express
his meaning or feeling through language.
For Example

 John
 He will come
 You love her, don’t you ?
Types of Intonation

1. Low Intonation 1
2. Neutral/ Base Intonation 2
3. High Intonation 3
4. Extra High Intonation 4
Pattern Intonation
Falling Intonation [2 3 1]

 Either used in single or multi words, Falling intonation generally


expresses a statement.
 For example : He likes her

Rising Intonation [2 3 3]

 Rising Intonation indicates ask someone a question or ask for information or


expect to continuous the conversation.
 For example : A : Excuse me?
B : Yes (intonation 2 3 3)

Extra-Rising Intonation [2 4 4]

 Extra-rising intonation when asks about something in disbelief or surprise.


 For Example : You love him ?

Extra-rising Falling Intonation [2 4 1]

 Extra-rising Falling Intonation when someone is very happy, excited, surprised.


 For example : You look great ( intonation [2 4 1] , when some one
has not seen his friend for an extend period of time ).

Sustained Intonation [2 3 2]

 Sustained Intonation indicates non-finality and is used in a series of number


counting.
 For example :
Refree : Ok, one [2 3 2] => two [2 3 2] => three [2 3 1]

Falling and Rising Intonation

 This pattern indicates that the speaker agrees to certain extent, but not completely
 For example :
You love him, don’t you?
Rising and Falling Intonation

 There are various meaning in this pattern. It can indicate surprise, strong
approval or disapproval.
 For example :
He came early!
Sentence Stress

 The intonation of a sentence can be changed for its normal


interpretation into more specific meaning. The way to do by
shifthing the sentence stress.
 For example:
 JOHN bought the book (not other Jhon)
 John BOUGHT the book (not borrowed)
 John bought the BOOK (not food)
