INTONATION
OBJECTIVES

• The learners are expected to:


• Identify patterns of intonation;
• Distinguish between rising and falling intonation
when listening to a material;
• Apply the correct intonation in speaking and
reading phrases or sentences.
STRESS

• – emphasis laid on specific syllables of a word or a specific


word in a sentence.
• There are two: Word stress and Sentence stress.
• Word stress: when a particular syllable is pronounced with
more emphasis in comparison with other syllables.
Example: Garden = Gar-den;
• Sentence stress: a particular word is given emphasis
compared to the rest of the sentence.
Example: It was awesome.
INTONATION

• is the rise and fall in pitch of the voice in speech.


• It indicates the mood of the speaker.
• There are two basic patterns of intonation in
English: falling intonation and rising intonation,
there can also be a combination of the two, the
Rise-fall, and Fall-rise intonation.
FALLING INTONATION

• (The pitch of the voice falls at the end of the


sentence.) is the most common intonation
pattern in English.
• It is commonly found in statements,
commands, wh-questions (information
questions), confirmatory question tags and
exclamations.
FALLING INTONATION

• Examples:
• Nice to meet ↘you. (Statement)
• Write your name ↘here. (Command)
• What school do you come ↘from? (Wh-question)
• She is really a gifted student, isn’t ↘ she? (Questions Tags for confirmation)
• How nice of ↘ you! (Exclamations)
RISING INTONATION

• Rising intonation (The pitch of the voice


rises at the end of a sentence.) invites the
speaker to continue talking.
• It is normally used with yes/no questions,
and question tags that are real questions.
RISING INTONATION

Examples:
Yes/No Questions:
• Do you like your new ➚teacher?
• May I ask for some ➚ paper?
Question tags that requires answering:
• We've met already, ➚haven't we?
• You like joining quiz bees, ➚ don’t you?
RISE-FALL INTONATION

• (The intonation rises and then


falls.) for choices, lists,
unfinished thoughts and
conditional sentences.
RISE FALL INTONATION

Examples:
Choices:
• Is John leaving on ➚Thursday or ➘Friday?
Lists:
• We've got school supplies like ➚pencils, paper, pens and
➘erasers.
Unfinished thoughts (partial statements):
So you both live in Lucena? Well ➚Juan ➘does ... (but I don't).
FALL-RISE INTONATION

• (The voice falls and rises usually within one word.)


shows that the speaker is not certain of the answer
they are giving to a question, or is reluctant to reply
(as opposed to a falling tone used when there is no
hesitation). It is also used in polite requests or
suggestions.
FALL-RISE INTONATION

Examples:
Hesitation / Reluctance
• So you'd be willing to confirm that? ...Well ... I
➘sup➚pose so ..
Politeness – Doubt – Uncertainty (Unsure of what
answer will be)
• Should we ➘cop➚y his notes?
GROUP ACTIVITY!

The class will be divided into two. Each group will be given 3-5
minutes to compose a brief 1-2-minute conversation, after
performing, each group will identify will identify what kind of
intonations were present in the conversation of the other group.
QUIZ!!!

On a piece of paper, write whether the item has rising, falling or Rising-falling intonation.
Write R if it has rising intonation, F if falling, RF if Rise-Fall and F-R if Fall-Rise.

ASSIGNMENT!

• For your assignment, create a video


with you reciting 10 sentences with
rising and falling intonation. There
must be five sentences for rising and
also five for falling.
