Method of Successive

Substitutions (MOSS)
Roots of Algebraic & Transcendental Equations

SCYLLA MAE D. CABONG

INTRODUCTION

The equations of the form f(x) = 0 where f(x) is purely a

polynomial in x. e.g. – – – 1 = 0 is called an algebraic
equation. But, if f(x) involves trigonometrical, arithmetic or
exponential terms in it, then it is called transcendental
equation. E.g. x – 2 = 0 and
x – 1.2 = 0.
What is MOSS?

It is a Numerical Method for solving the unknown in a

Nonlinear Equation.

Example of Nonlinear Equations:

• Condition:

• If there exists a root of in the interval

• Test for Convergence:

When to stop the substitutions?
Termination Criteria

1. Absolute Error

2. Relative Error

3. A prescribed number of iteration is reached.

SAMPLE PROBLEM
 Find that solves the following equation:

Solution
Step 1: Rewrite the nonlinear function to the form given by .
SAMPLE PROBLEM

Step 2: Test for vicinity of possible root.

, therefore there is no root between -1 and 0.

SAMPLE PROBLEM

Step 2: Test for vicinity of possible root.

, therefore there exists a root between 0 and 1.

SAMPLE PROBLEM

Step 3: Start with an initial guess.

 Guess a number that is in between 0 and 1.

0.5
SAMPLE PROBLEM

Step 4: Test for convergence.

=0.125

, therefore the iteration method with will converge to one of the roots
of the equation.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
Step 4: Continue the iteration.

)
0 0.5 0.1875
1 0.1875 0.1677652995
2 0.1677652995 0.1674536312
... ... ...
SAMPLE PROBLEM
When to stop?
Continue iteration until the result no longer changes to within a specified
tolerance.

Termination Criteria

1. Absolute Error

2. Relative Error

3. A prescribed number of iteration is reached.

SAMPLE PROBLEM
Step 5: To get the other roots, transform the equation to other forms
given by

Then follow the steps to get the other roots.
