PRECAUTION
It refers to the safety measures
which must be observed in the
workshop to prevent accidents and
injuries to users of the workshop.
Accidents and injuries to users of
workshop can be very deadly so
users must adopt measures to be
safe always.
GENERAL SAFETY MEASURES
IN THE WORKSHOP
1. Keep the workshop neat and
clean at all times.
2. Do not litter the workshop
floor with food materials like
banana peels.
3. Keep workshop tools and
materials at their right places.
4. Avoid running in the
workshop

clear of cables and cords.

6. Do not touch metals in a


foundry since they may be hot.

WHEN USING WORKSHOP
TOOLS
1. Hand over sharp tools to other
users by their handle.
2. Do not use tools with defects or
tools without handles.
3. Use the right tool for the right
job at all times.
4. Do not keep tools in your pocket.
5. Remove all mushroom heads and
burrs from chisels before using
them.
6. Do not chisel towards your body.
7. Avoid using damaged tools since
they can cause accidents.
8. Keep tools which are not needed
away from the working area.

WHEN USING MACHINES
1. Do not operate a machine until
you are told to do so.
2. Do not try to stop a machine
from running with your hands.
3. Keep your hands away from
the cutting edge of machines
when they are running.
4. Wear short sleeves overall
when operating on a rotating
machine.

5. Hold a workpiece firmly


before working on it.
SAFETY
Safety is a state in which a workshop
user is free from accidents and
injuries in the workshop.
Safety can therefore be ensured in
three main ways.
1. General safety
2. Tool safety
3. Personal safety
GENERAL SAFETY
General safety is ensured when
workshop users follow general
safety rules in the workshop.
EXAMPLE:
1.Dispose off waste material
generated in the workshop daily.
2.Concentrate fully when working
in the workshop.
TOOL SAFETY
Incorrect use and lack of care and
maintenance of tools can also
lead to accidents and injuries in
the workshop.
EXAMPLE:
When carrying hand tools, ensure
that their sharp edges point
towards the floor.
PERSONAL
SAFETY
To be adequately protected in the
workshop, a worker must wear
safety clothing to protect parts of
the body which are
fragile(delicate).
The use of protective or safety
clothing usually ensures the
personal safety of craftsmen.

protect delicate parts of the
body from injury when working
in the workshop.
Safety clothing include goggles,
helmet, hand gloves, safety
boots, face mask, apron or
overcoat/overall.
1. GOGGLES
It is worn to protect the eyes
from dust, chippings, sparks
and other flying objects.
2. HELMET
It is worn to protect the head
from injuries caused by falling
objects.
3. HAND GLOVES
It is worn to protect the hands
from poisonous chemicals, hot
objects and sharp tools.
4. APRON/OVERCOAT
It is worn to protect the body
from dirt, oil, excessive heat and
other poisonous chemicals.
5. SAFETY BOOTS
It is worn to protect the feet from
hot metals, sharp-pointed objects
and falling objects.
6. FACE MASK
It is worn to protect the nose and
mouth from inhaling dangerous
gases and fumes.

4. Overconfidence
5. Disregarding workshop rules

It is important to care for and
maintain workshop tools:
1. to keep their accuracy.
2. to keep their cutting edges
sharp.
3. to prolong their life span.
4. to keep them in good condition
HOW TO MAINTAIN
WORKSHOP TOOLS
1. Clean all tools properly after
use.

2. Oil and grease metallic tools


to prevent rusting.
3. Pack workshop tools in their
rightful places such as:

(a) Tool boxes- spanner, pincers


(b) Racks- files, screwdrivers
(c) Shelves- hammers
(d) Hangers- saws
