In 1948, he left for the Port of Aden, Yemen to work for A. Besse and Co. along with his
brother Ramnikbhai.
He once made a lot of money by melting the silver bullion and selling it as pure silver because
he knew that the value of pure silver was much higher than the bullion.
In Aden, his first son, Mukesh was born to him in 19 April 1957. Another son, Anil, was born
two years later in 1959.
Dhirubhai Ambani returned to India in 1958, He started a textile business “Majin” along with his cousin
Champaklal. Majin used to export goods like spices and rayon in yemen and import polyester.
In 1965, Champaklal Damani and Dhirubhai Ambani ended their partnership and Ambani started on his own.
In 1966, He formed Reliance Commercial Corporation which later became Reliance Industries on 8 May 1973.
The first office of the Reliance Commercial Corporation was set up at the Narsinatha Street, Mumbai. He launched
the brand Vimal during this time which sold polyester materials for saris, shawls, suits and dresses.

He subsequently diversified into chemicals, petrochemicals, plastics, power with an estimated annual turnover of 12
billion US dollar and an 85000 strong workforce.

Reliance went from a turnover of Rs. 70 crore in the mid 1970s to Rs 75000 crore empire in 2002.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
1996, 1998 and 2000 – featured among "Power 50-the most powerful people in Asia" by
Asiaweek magazine.
Dhirubhai Ambani was named the "Man of 20th Century" by the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry [FICCI].
January 2016- posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second-
highest civilian award.
Community development
Reliance attaches a high level of importance to improving the quality of life in the communities surrounding
all its manufacturing complexes. The initiatives include long-term efforts in areas of education, health, and
programmes for social upliftment.
Reliance runs its own schools at its manufacturing sites, which provide high quality education to the children
of employees. These schools are all equipped with modern amenities.
The Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation (DAF) has established the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information
and Communication Technology (DA-IICT) at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The institute was flagged off in August 2001, 246 students were admitted through an all-India entrance exam
for a four-year undergraduate programme in Information and Communication Technology. Postgraduate
programmes were added from academic year 2002-03 onwards.
