Lesson 2:

Mathematics
for Our World
Let’s Look Back…
The Department of Education
(DepEd) initialized to reinvent
our curriculum, now known as
the Enhanced Basic Education
Curriculum or the so called K-
12 Curriculum.

2
Let’s Look Back…
Its purpose is to add 2 more
years on our education system
which will have relevance to the
students themselves answering
to the needs of the people and
the society itself.

3
Let’s Look Back…
Enhanced Basic Mathematics
Education has only two things
that should be inculcated with
the students – Critical Thinking
and Problem Solving
(K-12 Math Curriculum, 2016)

4
Let’s Now Ask…
Nasaan na ang
Critrical Thinking
and Problem
Solving ko?!

5
Today we will..
seek how
Mathematics really
work for our world.

6
I. Mathematics for
Organization
Stop messing things around
“ Organizing is what you do before
you do something, so that when
you do it, it is not all mixed up.
~A.A. Milne

Good order is the foundation of

all things.
8 ~Edmund Burke
“ The essence of mathematics is
not to make simple things
complicated, but to make
complicated things simple.

~ S. Gudder

9
Math helps in Organizing so that:

⪢ Problems will become more

recognizable and easier to be
understood.
⪢ By further analyzing data, we can
actually follow the roots of the problem
itself.
⪢ We can suggest more proper response
on the problem.

10
Examples:
⪢ A teacher would like to know if
his/her students are doing well in
their class.
⪢ A store manager would like to check
the inventory of their merchandize
to monitor sales.
⪢ A carpenter will regularly check his
equipment and PPE’s before going
to work.

11
II. Mathematics for
Prediction
This is not fortune-telling
“ Some things are so unexpected
that no one is prepared for them.
~Leo Rosten

It is far better to foresee even

without certainty than not to
foresee at all.
~Henri Poincare
13
Math helps in Predicting so that:

⪢ We can be aware of the possibility of

future events if a certain pattern is
assumed to not change over time.
⪢ We can choose for the optimal/efficient
solution to deal with a problem.
⪢ We may realize the risks and
consequences of every thing we choose
to do.

14
Examples:
⪢ A weather forecaster will declare the
daily forecast on TV so that people can
prepare if a weather disturbance will
happen.
⪢ A Entrepreneur may analyze and see the
potential growth of his/her business as an
indicator to continue.
⪢ We can be aware of the consequences we
can face if we will not be responsible
enough to care for the environment.

15
III. Mathematics for
Control
We got a power??
“ All I can control is myself and
just keep having a positive
attitude.
~ Rose Namajunas

Learn from the past, set vivid,

detailed goals for the future, and
live in the only moment of time
over which you have any
control: now.
17 ~Denis Waitley
Math helps in Controlling so that:

⪢ We can avoid or alleviate possible

negative outcomes that would come our
way if we don’t control our actions.
⪢ We can choose to instead do more
positive things than before.
⪢ Man will be more conscious,
accountable and responsible than ever
before.

18
Examples:
⪢ A student may chose to spend more time
in studying or in doing non-productive
activities.
⪢ An engineer may or may not follow the
prescribed specification of a public
project to earn bigger money from the
excess budget.
⪢ A Public Servant is free to choose
whether he do his duty or not (besides,
he/she is only in his office at all)
