and Distance Coloring

Definition 1.1. A proper -coloring of a graph is an assignment of colors to the vertices

of such that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same color. Equivalently a proper -
coloring of is a partition of the vertex set into disjoint independent sets .
Hence, each independent set is a set of vertices of same color and the chromatic
number is the minimum for which admits a proper -coloring
Definition 1.2. A -distance coloring of a graph is an assignment of colors to vertices
such that every two vertices at distance at most receive distinct colors. i.e., any two
vertices and with receive distinct colors.
The -distance chromatic number of , denoted by is the smallest integer for which
admits a -distance coloring.
Definition 1.3. An exact -distance coloring of a graph is an assignment of colors to
vertices such that every two vertices at distance receive distinct colors. i.e., any two
vertices and with receive distinct colors.
The exact -distance chromatic number of , denoted by is the smallest integer for
which admits a -distance coloring.

b-Coloring
Definition 1.4. A -coloring of by colors is a proper -coloring such that in each color
class, there exists a vertex adjacent to at least one vertex in every other color class. Such a
vertex is called a color dominating vertex.
In other words, if has a proper vertex coloring by colors and the vertex set is
partitioned into color classes where contains vertices of color such that there is a vertex
for each in such a way that has a neighbor in every other color class then such a coloring
is called a -coloring.
The -chromatic number of , denoted by , is the largest integer such that has a -
coloring with colors.
Hence, if has a -coloring with colors, then it has at least color dominating vertices.
Consequently, has at least vertices of degree at least .
It is easy to see that is an upper bound for Later, an improved upper bound for denoted
by was found.
Definition 1.5. Let be the vertex set of such that the vertices are ordered so that . Then
the -degree of is defined by .
Equivalently, the term -degree of is defined as has at least vertices of degree at
least .

Some of the results in the literature on b-coloring

• F. Kramer and H. Kramer [K11], [K12] introduced the distance coloring in 1969.
• Irving and Manlove [I2] studied a new coloring called a -coloring in 1991.
• The -continuity was introduced by Faik [F1]. He showed in 2004 that chordal graphs
are -continuous.
• Barth, Cohen, Faik [B4] discussed the -spectrum of graphs. They showed that for
any finite integer set , there exists a graph whose -spectrum is in 2007.
• Exact -distance colouring of Graphs were studied by T. N. Janakiraman, M.
Poobalaranjani and A. Senthil Thilak [J4] in 2012.
• The -Chromatic Number of Helm and Closed Helm was obtained by S. K. Vaidya
and M. S. Shukla [V1] in 2014.
• The -chromatic number of Cartesian product of some families of graphs was given
by Balakrishnan, Francis Raj, Kavaskar [B2] in 2014.

2-Distance -coloring of graphs - Definitions

Definition 2.11. A 2-distance -coloring (or -coloring) of a graph is a -coloring of such that
any two vertices at distance at most 2 receive distinct colors. More explicitly, a -coloring is a
2-distance coloring in which every color class contains a (i.e., contains a vertex which has a
neighbor in every other color class).
In other words, as the name states, a 2-distance -coloring of a graph is a coloring which
is both a -coloring as well as a 2-distance coloring.

Definition 2.12. The 2-distance -chromatic number or simply -number is the largest integer
such that admits a 2-distance -coloring with -colors.

Definition 2.13. A graph which admits 2-distance -coloring is said to be a 2-distance -

CHAPTER-6
CONCLUSION

7/23/2021 R.PICHAILAKSHMI 68
Chapter 7- Conclusion

Summary of all chapters

• Cocoloring is a growing concept in the field of graph theory and so far an

attempt on combining domination and cocoloring is not known.
• Also there are no results relating domination and cocoloring and consequently
domination and cocoloring parameters.
• We have combined the concept of domination and cocoloring and defined two
new cocoloring.
• Their corresponding cochromatic parameters are also defined.
• Other than that, four new cocoloring variants are introduced and general upper
and lower bounds are obtained for arbitrary graphs and exact bounds are
obtained for standard graphs.

7/23/2021 R.PICHAILAKSHMI 69
Chapter 7- Conclusion

Summary of all chapters

• Graphs are classified based on their splitting graph. New inequalities are obtained
relating z(G) with other graph parameters such as 𝛳(G) , 𝛾 (G), and 𝜒 (G).
• Further, 3-chromatic graphs with z(G) = 2 are characterized.
• The definitions of star partition, path partition and cycle partition of the vertex
set of a graph motivated to combine the concepts of these various partitions
together with cocoloring
• These coloring with the condition on the 3rd parameter r gives three new
cocoloring called as star cocoloring, path cocoloring and cycle cocoloring of a
graph.
• In star, path and cycle partition problem, order of the star, path and cycle are not
specified.
• Their respective cochromatic parameters are also defined.

7/23/2021 R.PICHAILAKSHMI 70
Chapter 7- Conclusion

Summary of all chapters

• The concept of vertex partition having sets of equal cardinality

stimulated another cocoloring called as strong cocoloring.
Subsequently, the corresponding graph parameter strong
cochromatic number is also introduced.Cocoloring and variants of
cocoloring on some graph operations and graph products were
studied and results were obtained.
• The bounds of various cochromatic parameters on join, corona and
Cartesian product of two graphs are discussed. This property helps to
generalize many cochromatic bounds

7/23/2021 R.PICHAILAKSHMI 71
Future studies

All the partitions introduce in this thesis are vertex partition, all these
concepts can be extended to edge partition.
The cochromatic parameter z(G) of a graph is same as that of the
cochromatic parameter of the complement of G, as the partition
contains only independent sets and cliques whose complements are
cliques and independent sets respectively. Since, the complement of a
star, path and cycle need be the same class, these cocoloring properties
can be further explored in the complement of a graph.
Any parameter study leads to Nordhaus-Gaddum type of results. They
can be studied.

Applications

7/23/2021 R.PICHAILAKSHMI 73
Applications

Some application in the field of electrical engineering

The system called Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) system is

one of the graph partition problems in order to reduce the
connections between circuits in designing VLSI. The main objective
of this partitioning is to reduce the VLSI design complexity by
splitting them into a smaller component.
Another goal of a good partition is to reduce the number of
connection among the circuit components. Here vertices are cells and
edges are wires between them.
In Electronic engineering, the concept of cliques helps to analyse
the communications networks and describe an application of cliques
in finding a hierarchical partition of an electronic circuits into
smaller sub units
7/23/2021 R.PICHAILAKSHMI 74
Applications

Some application in the field of network

In any networking system, there is a main server controlling the

whole system. While designing any network, ultimate objective is to
optimize the usage, reduce the number of checking points and a
place to monitor everything and everyone and to communicate with
them.
In some network, in certain areas all connections are totally
interlinked and some place they are total independent and linked
only with the main server.
If the network is represented by a graph with vertices representing
the service centers and edges representing the connection, finding a
dominating cocoloring and γ-cocoloring of the graph solves the
problem.
