BRIEF DEFINITIONS
Societal (Social) influence is the
process by which an individual's
attitudes, beliefs or behavior are
modified by the presence or action of
others.
BRIEF DEFINITIONS

Influence creates an internal shift in a


person's mindset. The world's
most influential people don't merely
change other's behavior; they shift their
mindsets.
BRIEF DEFINITIONS
Social Pressures are the
combined pressures that are around you
during everyday life such as Peer Pressure,
Academic Pressures,
Socioeconomic Pressure. ..
 A few may not agree with me but
Peer Pressure is not always a bad thing. It
can help in many different ways.
Types of Societal (Social) Influence
Conformity

 Conformity is a type of social


influence involving a change in
behavior, belief, or thinking to align with
those of others or with normative
standards.
It is the most common and pervasive form
of social influence.
Compliance

Compliance is either a state of being in


accordance with established guidelines
or specifications, or the process of
becoming so.
Obedience

Obedience is compliance with


an order, request, or law or
submission to another's
authority.
Does Obedience mean
agreement?
The types of Social Influence can have
either of the following effects on us:
Negative
Neutral
Positive
Life changing.
Why is Peer Pressure so important?
 The pressure to conform (to do what others are
doing) can be powerful and hard to resist. A
person might feel pressured to do something just
because others are doing it (or say they are). 
 Peerpressure can influence a person to do
something that is relatively harmless — or
something that has more serious consequences.
Types of Peer Pressure
Positive Peer Pressure.
 Positivepeer pressure is when
someone's peers influence them
to do something positive or growth building.
For example, peers who are committed to
doing well in school or at
sport can influence others to be more goal
orientated.
Similarly, peers who are kind, loyal or
supportive influence others to be the same.
Negative Peer Pressure.
Negative effects of peer
pressure include: pressure to
use alcohol, cigarettes or
drugs. pressure to engage in
risk taking behaviours.
distraction from schoolwork.
The causes of Peer Pressure
A desire to 'fit in. '
The need to avoid rejection and gain social
acceptance.
Hormonal inconsistencies.
Personal/social confusion and/or anxiety.
(Identity Crisis)
Poor Structure from the home.
Dangers of Social Pressure
 Increased self-destructive behavior (drinking,
drugs, casual sex; etc).
 Increased self-esteem and mental health issues.
 Increased risk of isolation.
 Increased risk of suicide or self-harm.
How to shield away from Social
Pressure
Investing
in your self-care.
Knowing your own values and stick to
them.
Knowing your personal boundaries.
Remember… you always have a choice.

Know when to say NO.
Follow & Trust your heart...
Remember quality over quantity
especially with friends.
Getting help from matured or
professional grown ups is okay.
