Communication
This is the exchange of data or passing of

data,concepts or thought from one

person to another.
Communication is the method of passing
data from one person to another.
Purpose of communication
• The aim of communication is to have a
good and correct understanding of the
message.
• Whatever form the message might take
from the sender, clarity of message,
without any ambiguity is very important
to the receiver; else the purpose of the
communication would be terribly
defeated.

Communications and information
• Data communication is the process of
transferring information between two places in
a form which can be handled by data
communication equipment.
• Data communication is also often referred to
as computer communication, because
computers, or computer peripheral devices
such as printers, are usually involved.
• Information in data communication terms
loosely refers to the symbols or signals used to
make up a message.
Communications and information Contd.

• In data communications the meaning or facts (an

alternative definition of information) conveyed by
the message is usually irrelevant. This is reassuring as
it means that it is not a function of the
communication equipment to consider the sense or
importance of the messages sent.
• Messages can be sent in many ways, using various
transmission media from the information source to
its destination.
• Speech, for example, enables people to communicate
over short distances using sounds carried by air,
which is the transmission medium in this case.
Communications and information Contd.

• An electrical communication channel that we are all

familiar with is the telephone line, which allows us to
hold voice conversations over long distances.
• A standard telephone line uses a pair of copper wires
as the transmission medium to carry the electrical
signals produced by the telephone equipment.
• These signals, generated by the microphone of the
handset when the caller speaks, are an electrical
analogue of the pressure waves in the air.
• The receiving telephone converts the electrical signals
back to sound vibrations to deliver the messages.
