What is HCI?
O Human
O The end user of a program/system/tool.
O The others within the organization.

O Computer
O The machine the program runs on it.
O Examples: PC, laptop, tablet, smartphones, devices.

O Interaction
O User : tells the computer what they wants.
O Computer : communicates the results.
What is HCI?
O Interaction  Interface

O Gestures Interfaces: detect movement.

O Gaze Systems: detect the blink and movement of eyes.
O Voice Recognition: detect the voice/sound by natural
language processing (speech disorders).
O Haptics Technologies: detection by technological objects.
O Augmented Reality: computer generated images similar
to the real world.
What is HCI?
O How to design interface?

O Know your user.

O User control.
O Intuitive design.
O Feedback.
O Consistent.
O Attractive.
Definition of HCI
O HCI is a discipline concerned with the design,
evaluation and implementation of interactive
computing systems for human use and with the study
of major phenomena surrounding them.
(ACM SIGCHI,
1992)

O HCI is a study of the relationships which exist

between human users and the computer systems they
use in the performance of their various tasks.
(Christine Faulkner,
2001)
Definition of HCI
O HCI is about designing computer systems that support
people so that they can carry out their activities
productively and safely.
(Preece, 2002)

O HCI in the context of organizational work is to

understand and shape the way people interact with
computers: the processes they engage in, the
resources they use and the impact they accomplish.

(Te’eni,Carey & Zhang, 2007)

The Goals and Importance of
HCI
O The goals of HCI are to produce usable and safe, as
well as functional systems.

O Goals include:
O Safety (example: safety-critical systems)
O Utility (functionality)
O Effectiveness (intuitive)
O Efficiency (task achievement)
O Usability (easy to learn and use)
