INTRODUCTION

● In India, there are nearly 120 million elderly people with various physical,
psychosocial, economic, and these people need an active aging program
to keep them independent. This is where geriatric care comes into play.

● Geriatric care is a specialty that is based on improving health care for


elderly people.
GERIATRIC GIANTS

● In 1965, Bernard Isaacs from UK coined the term ‘geriatric giants’.

● Professor Isaacs named these ‘giants’ as immobility, instability,


incontinence, and impaired intellect/memory.

● The understanding of ‘modern geriatric giants’ has evolved to further


encompass four new syndromes. They are frailty, sarcopenia, the
anorexia of ageing, and cognitive impairment.
IMPORTANCE

● It consider patients preferences and their needs.


● Support their decision-making skill
● Help them to achieve emotional stability.
● Make them feel safe and secure to openly talk
NATIONAL HEALTH POLICY FOR
OLDER PERSONS

● The National Policy on Older Persons was announced by the Government


of India in the year 1999.
● The well-being of senior citizens is mandated in the Constitution of India
under Article 41.
● Pensions, travel concessions, income tax relief, medical benefit, extra
interest on savings, security of older persons through an integrated
scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment .
● The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment piloted landmark
legislation the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act
2007 .
● Establishment of separate bureau for the older persons in the ministry.
● Development of the manpower for the caring of the aged.
FUNCTIONS

● Assess the mental status and cognitive skills


● Discuss the common health concerns such as a change in sleep pattern,
incontinence
● Organize medications
● Educate patients about personal safety and prevention of disease
● Link patients with local resources that they may require
PHYSICAL FACILITY

Facility-based long-term care services include: board and care homes, assisted
living facilities, nursing homes, and continuing care retirement communities.
Some facilities have only housing and housekeeping, but many also provide
personal care and medical services. Many facilities offer special programs for
people with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.
