WATER
• The most basic necessity of
Mankind.
• 1% of global water is fit for
consumption.
• Huge disparity between
developed and underdeveloped
nations when it comes to access to
safe drinking water.
• Water has become a business! Is it
Ethical?
PRIVATISATION

French MNC’s Suez and Vivendi have dominated the

water business in developing countries.
Privatisation increases efficiency ,address service
levels and provide access to poor water facilities in
developing world.
CONS OF PRIVATSATIONS

Full Cost Recovery method by the private players.

The Government charges its people which inturn makes the most commonly
available thing less affordable.

Water wars in Bolivia made the people pay for access to freely available water in
their own wells and not even be allowed to collect rain water.

Privatisation is not exclusive to the developing world, it impacted UK as well as

there was a 31% increase in tax for the same.
MASSIVE
CONSUMPTION BY Coca cola in kerala was ordered to close
INDUSTRIES due to ground water levels falling by 40
feet!
It extracted about 510000 litres of water
everyday.

Further Coca cola reorganised its

consumption and started using 24% less
water.
Water wastage by nestle in Canada.

CONCLUSION
• The most commonly available and the basic
necessity of life has become a luxury!
• Certainly we can expect worse days if
appropriate measures aren’t taken by mankind.
QUESTIONS
Q1. Who are the main stakeholders of
beverage companies such as Coca-Cola
and Nestle in this case? How could one
prioritize their stakes and how
legitimate are the different stakes?

Q2. Discuss the potential and the limits

of what corporations can ultimately
achieve in the business of water.
