Present Simple is used...


• To express habits, repeated actions or events

• He drinks tea at breakfast.


• They always watch TV in the evening.
• She only eats vegetables and fruits.
• I run every morning.
• We travel every year.

• To express general truths:

• Water freezes at 0 degrees.


• The Earth goes around the Sun.
• The Sun rises in the east.
• Plants give us oxygen.

• To give instructions or directions:

• You walk for 200 meters, then you turn left.


• Open the packet and pour the contents into hot water.
• Place your dirty laundry into the drum of the washing machine.

• For fixed arrangements, present or future:

• Our holiday starts on the 26th March


• Your exam starts at 09.00 o’clock.
• His mother arrives tomorrow.
• Train leaves at 11.00 o’clock.

• Forming the Present Simple tense:

• Affirmative – I think.

• Interrogative – Do I think?

• Negative – I don’t think.

• In the third person singular the verb always ends in -s:

He wants this T-shirt.


She sometimes needs your help.
Dad gives me a candy every day.
Molly never thinks about me.

• Negative and question forms use DOES + the infinitive of the verb

Does he want strawberry?


She does not want vanilla. (She doesn’t want vanilla)

• Verbs ending in -y : the third person changes the -y to -ies:

fly  flies, cry  cries

• Exception: if there is a vowel before the -y:

play  plays, pray  prays, say  says
