Why This Discussion is
Important
• The electric vehicles market in India appears to be to
Gaining traction.

• Companies have not only started to manufacture electric

scooters and bikes in states like Uttar Pradesh, but have
also begun to research for alternatives to lithium – ion
batteries ,which are mostly imported from china.

• Recently, EV major Tesla has started its operations in India.

• Fossil Fuel Prices are sky rocketing.

Do we need to argue
about it?
• According to world economic forum report, 6 of the
world’s 10 most polluted cities are in India.

• India’s oil import dependence jumps to 84 percent.

• India promised to Net zero carbon emission by 2070.

Big Challenges ahead
Charging Infrastructure
• Large number of charging stations across the
country needed.

 Only 300 charging stations are available in India.

• Ensure that charging stations uses renewable

energy resources to charge vehicles.
Higher Cost

• Electric cars are expensive

 Tesla model 3 costs around 60 lakh rupees.

 Maintenance cost is triple compared to

petrol/diesel cars.

 Still not affordable for general public.

Lack Of Technology

• Mileage problem

 One litre petrol gives 30-40 kms of mileage

compared to that electric vehicles gives very
little mileage from charging one time.
 Ather one the advanced electric scooters gives
approximately 120 kms if charged once.

• Research in the Field of Lithium-ion

batteries needed.
Import of Components and material
• Large dependence on China.

• Focus on “Make In India” in production of

components of electric vehicles.
Lack of Skilled Workforce in India

• Factories need skilled persons to handle the

production of EV components.

• Mechanics who can work and repair Electric

vehicles.
Possible Disruption of Existing
Automobile sector

• Give time to existing automobile

companies for steady transition from
fossil fuels to EVs.
What are we doing?
National Electric Mobility Mission plan 2013
was launched by then govt.

• Already incentivise electric vehicles in India.

Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid
And Electric Vehicles in India(FAME India)
2015

• Technology Development
• Demand Creation
• Charging Infrastructure
• Pilot Projects
Ministry of Information and Technology(MeITY’s)
Phased Manufacturing Programme 2016

• Focus on electric components manufacturing and

Battery technology.

• Essential Components of Electric Vehicles.

National Mission on Transformative Mobility
and Battery Storage 2019

• R & D in Battery Technology

• Inviting Foreign Players like Tesla

Focus Areas
Charging Infrastructure

• Govt already Decided to increase the existing

number of 300 charging stations 2900 by 2023.

• Use of Renewable Energy for Charging Stations

Research and Development in Battery Technology

• Increase the capacity of Lithium-ion Batteries.

• Any other Source of Energy like Aluminium – Air Batteries.

Scour For essential Metals

• Finding most of the raw materials in India.

• Decreasing Dependence on China.

• Atleast purchase materials from our allied Nations.

Make In India Electric Vehicles
• Needed Push for Our Domestic Automobile Companies.

• Subsidies by Government for production of Electric

vehicles
Proper Education About Electric Vehicles

• Introduction of courses which solely focuses on Electric

Vehicle Technology in School.

• Graduate Courses and Post graduate Courses.

• Introduction of trade courses in various ITIs regarding

handling of electric Vehicles.
