INTRODUCTION
• The medieval period is known for architecture , paintings , language
and literature.
• The structure or monuments were of two kinds
1. Forts , Palaces and Gateways which were constructed for safety and
protection
2. Temples , Mosques , Gardens , Tanks and Bazaars which were
constructed for public activities.
ARCHITECTURAL DEVELOPMENTS IN 12TH
CENTURY
• Arch were introduce – They were beautiful in shape and
strong enough to carry the weight of the supper
structures above the door and windows
• A unique type of cement made with limestone was
used in constructions due to this construction of the
large structures became easier and faster.
ARCHITECTURE DURING SULTNATE PERIOD
• Existing style of Indian architecture
1. The concept of courtyard and colonnades introduced which
includes a raw of stone coloumns with equal spaces between
them.
2. Balconies supported by brackets were included.
3. The decoration and beautification of structures with the help
of carvings.
• New styles and techniques were introduced by the turks and
afghans who came India and later settled there
1. Use marble and red sandstone that gives royal look to the Mughal
structures.
2. Use of arch , the dome and the minaret.
3. To decorate the buildings , geomatrical designs , flowers and
Arabic calligraphy were used.

• Havelis are magnificent mansion that usually have colourful
paintings on the wall.
• Small courtyard is a unique feature of havelis.
• Mural paintings were done on outer and inner walls.
• Gold and silver leaves and a lot of mirror pieces were used as
decorations.

• Wealthy rulers in Haryana and Gujrat built a number of baolis.
• These are step wells to obtain underground water.
• Baolis had a unique and beautiful architectural tiles with impressive
appearences and sheer massiveness.
MUGHAL ARCHITECTURE
• The style adopted by the Mughals was a combination of Persian ,
Indian and provincial architecture.
• Mughal concentrated on symmetry and balance between the
parts of the building.
• They also gave very delicate ornamental details.
• Many of the buildings reflect the personal styles and likes of
ruler.
MUGHAL ARCHITECTURE
• Some rulers displayed their victories in wars through
architecture.
• Large gardens were placed with in rectangular walls enclosures.
• White marble and red sandstone were famous material among the
Mughals
• Extensive wood carving were done in temples.

• The architectural wonders of the medieval period were built
to showcase power , wealth or a victory. We need to admire
the fact that they designed and constructed without
machines , computers and modern tools by skilled workers
and ace designers. The material used was of such quality that
it can still leave behind our certified products.
