Background of the Study

Introduction

Fishing is one of humanity's oldest

occupations. It contributes significantly to income, foreign

exchange profits, and overall economic security because

it employs not only fishermen but also people who work in

the complete supply chain, from vessel construction to

equipment supplies associated to this activity.

In the Philippines many Filipinos have relied on it as a

source of income for many years due to the abundance of water

resources in the country. We value fisheries on cultural,

economic, social, and ecological levels.

Moreover, when primary revenue sources fail due to

economic shifts, conflict, natural disasters, or water

development projects, fishing is the last resource. They act as

social safety nets, offering an additional or alternative source of

money, work, and food (Welcomme et al. 2010).

Through the years, fishing industy

constantly facing various problems and small

scale fishermen were highly affected. Thus,

this research focuses on the fishermen at

Cagcagan, Poro, Cebu and the goal was to see

what factors highly influencing the fishermen of

Cagcagan in their fishing activity.

their fishing activity at Cagcagan, Poro, Cebu.

Summary

This study was conducted at Cagcagan, Poro, Cebu with

a total of thirty fishermen as a respondents. A descriptive method

was used in this study. Moreover, the mean research tool used in

this study was a researcher-made likert-questionnaire, and

interpreted using a weighted mean and desciptive equivalent.

Factors that influenced fishermen in their fishing in terms of:

Socio-economic Aspects

 the overall weighted mean of socio-economic aspect was 2.44 and

described as “very least influenced”.

Natural and Environmental Variations

 The overall weighted mean is 3.02 and described as influenced.

Personal Technique
 The overall weighted mean of their technique in fishing is 2.02 with the
descriptive equivalent as “very least influenced”.
Conclusion

The Working Zero Hypothesis was that, the factors from

socio-economic aspect were highly influencing fishermen
among other factors in their fishing activity. But based on
the data gathered, the researchers came up with the
following conclusion; the factor that highly influenced the
fishermen of Cagcagan, Poro, Cebu among others factors
in their fishing activity was the natural and environmental
variations. This means that the quantity of their catched is
affected by the natural and environmental variation and
thus affects their income.
Recommendations

Based on the conclusion made, the following

recommendations are given: that a more concentrated and
thorough research on the factors enfluencing fishermen in their
fishing activity be made by the future researchers to determine the
more focused result; local government are encourage to
implement programs and oppotunities for alternative source of
income for the local fishermen so that their income will not highly
be affected if natural and environmental variations arises in their
fishing; local agencies are encourage to give support to local the
fishermen by educating them in regards of this matter.
