Definition
PATROLLING
⮚Patrol missions are done to gather information or to
establish contact with the enemy.

⮚A detachment sent out unit to perform an assigned


mission reconnaissance or a combat or a combination of
both.

Reconnaissance Patrol

⮚ Reconnaissance patrols -provide timely and


accurate information on the enemy and terrain.
⮚ move to specific point or area, gather required
information through observance and report
information obtained. They will avoid enemy
contact whenever possible. Fighting only when
necessary to accomplish the mission.
Reconnaissance Patrol

⮚ Three type of Recon Patrol


• Area reconnaissance
• Zone reconnaissance
• Route reconnaissance

Area Reconnaissance- is conducted to


obtain information about a specified
location and the area around.
⮚ Zone Reconnaissance - is conducted to
obtain information on enemy, terrain, and
routes within a specified zone.
▪ techniques include the use of moving elements, stationary
teams, or a series of area reconnaissance actions.

Reconnaissance Patrol

⮚ Route Reconnaissance- conducted to


obtain detailed information about one
route and all the adjacent terrain.
Combat Patrol

⮚ Combat patrol are conducted to destroy or capture enemy soldiers or


equipment, destroy installations, facilities, or key points, or harass enemy
forces.

▪ Support Element
⮚ Tasks to fire team- the squad leader must make every
attempt to maintain team integrity as he assigns tasks
to subordinate units.
Combat Patrol
►The squad leader must consider the requirements
for assaulting the objective; supporting the
assault by fire; and, securing the platoon
throughout the mission.
►The squad leader must assign additional tasks for
search of enemy killed and captured; guarding of
EPWs; treatment and evacuation of friendly
casualties; or, other tasks required for successful
completion of the patrol mission.
►The squad leader must determine who will
control any attachments of skilled personnel or
special equipment.
Combat Patrol

⮚ Types of combat patrols


► Ambush
► Raids
▪ Ambush- a surprise attack from a concealed position on
a moving or temporarily halted target.
▪ Raids- a combat operation to attack a position or
installation followed by a planned withdrawal.
Tracking Patrol

⮚ Tracking patrol- a squad may receive the mission to follow the trail of a
specific enemy unit. Soldiers look for signs left by the enemy. They
gather information about the enemy unit, the route, and the surrounding
terrain as they track.

⮚ Tasks to fire team- The most important consideration in assigning duties
is the requirement to put the soldier best trained in tracking as the
primary tracker.
►Patrol Leader. The squad leader is the patrol
leader and the main navigator. He has overall
responsibility for mission accomplishment.
►Primary Tracker. This soldier's only task is to
follow the main trail of the main body of the
unit being tracked.
►Security Man. This soldier provides security for
the primary tracker. When possible, he acts as
the primary tracker's buddy.
►Security Team. One buddy provides security for
the squad leader and RTO.
►Rear Security Team. One buddy provides rear
security for the squad.

⮚ Initial planning and coordination
►Coordination must be through and detailed.
►Use checklists to preclude omitting any item any
items vital to the accomplishment of the mission
►The leader coordinates with the battalion staff or
coy cmndr
►The leader coordinates with the unit through
which his platoon or squad will conduct its
forward and rearward passage lines
►The platoon leader also coordinates patrol
activities with leaders of the units that will be
patrolling in adjacent areas at the same time.

⮚Rally points- is a place designated by the leader


where the platoon moves to reassemble or
reorganize if it becomes dispersed.

⮚ Objective rally points- a point out of sight,
sound, and small arms range of objective.

the near and far side of danger areas

⮚ Leader’s recon of the objective- pinpoints the


objective; selects security, support, assaulting
position for his squad and fire team; issue FRAGO

⮚ Reentry of friendly lines
► Follow sequence
o Halts and establishes all around security
o Coordinate or establish contact advising friendly units that the troop
ready to return
o Once friendly units acknowledge, Pltn ldr issue five point of
contingency plan and moves with ratelo and two buddy team on a
determine azimuth and pace to the reentry points
o Pltn sergeant or team sergeant disseminate five points of
contingency plan
o Pltn ldr use near and far recognition signal from friendly units
o Pltn ldr contact or return the platoon and leads to the reentry points
o Pltn Sgt counts and identifies each soldier as passes to the reentry
points
o Pltn ldr report to the commander of the friendly units
