Electricity is used by a wide
variety of household
appliances and machines.
We use electricity for
cooking, lighting, ironing
and operating different
appliances.
An electric meter measures the amount of electricity
consumed and this can be expressed in kilowatt-
hour (k.w.h). One kilowatt is equal to 1000 watts.
An electric meter has four dials. The pointer of each
dial moves ten times as fast as the dial on the left. The
pointers of the dials next to each other move in
opposite directions. The pointers of B and D move
clockwise and the dials of A and C move
counterclockwise. If the pointer is between two
numbers, record the smaller number.

The reading of the above electric meter is

6 149 kwh.
Here is another example:

The reading is 6 385 kwh.

To find the amount of electricity consumed, subtract
the previous reading from the present reading.

Let us compute of the number of kilowatt-hours used

given a previous reading from the present reading of
6 385 kwh.
Present Reading: 6 385 kwh
Previous Reading: - 6 149 kwh
236 kwh
Another example:

Present Reading: 2 941 kwh

Previous Reading: - 2 736 kwh
205 kwh
The electricity consumed is 205 kwh.
