shape of a face look like ? ______

How many edges does a cube has?

How many vertices does a cube

have? ______ 8
How can we get the area of a square?
Area = side x side or in symbols
s x s or s²
= 4 cm x 4 cm
Area = 16 cm²
Since, the six faces of a cube are all squares, then
the surface area of a cube is 6 times the area of
one face.
SA = 6(side x side) or 6(s2 ) where is the side of a
face, which is a square
How can we get the area of a square?

SA = 6 (s x s)
= 6 (4 cm x 4 cm)

= 6 (16 cm² )

SA = 96 cm²
Take a look at this example:

SA = 6 (s x s)
= 6 (12 cm x 12 cm)

= 6 (144 cm² )

SA = 864 cm²
SA = 6 (s x s)
= 6 (8.3 cm x 8.3 cm)

8.3 cm = 6 (68.89 cm² )

SA = 413.34 cm²
The surface area of a figure is the sum of the areas
of all its faces.
The formula in finding the surface area of a cube is
6 times the area of one face. In symbols, SA =
6(side x side) or 6(s² )

SURFACE AREA OF
SOLID FIGURES
ROY S. FERNANDO
Find the area of each of the following rectangles. Write your
answers in your notebook.

A=lxw A=lxw A=lxw

A = 12 dm x 5 dm A = 6 dm x 4 dm A = 17 cm x 7 cm
A = 60 dm² A = 24 dm² A = 119 cm²
The surface area of a rectangular solid which is also called a
rectangular prism is the sum of the areas of all the faces.

How many faces does the figure

have? _______
How many vertices are there? _____8
12
How many edges are there? _____

What can you say about the faces? Are

they all the same? ______ No
To visualize clearly the faces of the rectangular prism, we
will unfold the figure
Which pairs of faces are
the same in size and
shape?

What plane figure do the

faces of a rectangular
prism represent?

How do you get the area of

a rectangle?
To find the surface area of the figure, we need to find the sum of
the areas of the 6 faces of the rectangular prism.
Face Area of Face (cm²)
A 10 x 3 = 30
B 10 x 5 = 50
C 10 x 3 = 30
D 10 x 5 = 50
E 5 x 3 = 15
F 5 x 3 = 15
Total The surface area of the figure
190
is 190 cm² .
We can also solve the same problem this way:

We know that:
1. the bottom and top faces have the same dimensions,
10 cm by 5 cm

2. the left and right faces (sides) have the same dimensions,
5 cm by 3 cm

3. the front and back faces have the same dimensions,

10 cm by 3 cm
Using the area formula for a rectangle, A = bh, we have:

1. for bottom and top faces

A = (10)(5) = 50 cm² Adding these areas to
50 x 2 = 100 cm² find the surface area,
we have
2. for left and right faces (sides) A
= (5)(3) = 15 cm² 100 cm² – bottom and top
15 x 2 = 30 cm² 30 cm² – left and right
60 cm² – front and back
3. for front and back faces 190 cm² – surface area
A = (10)(3) = 30 cm²
30 x 2 = 60 cm²
To solve for the surface area of a rectangular prism, we can use a
formula.

SA = 2(lw) + 2(wh) + 2(lh) or 2 (lw + wh + lh),

where SA = surface area

l = length
w = width
h = height
For the example we did earlier:
l = 10 cm; w = 5 cm; h = 3 cm

SA = 2(lw) + 2(wh) + 2(lh)

= 2(10)(5) + 2(5)(3) + 2(10)(3)

= 2(50 cm² ) + 2(15 cm² ) + 2(30 cm² )

= 100 cm² + 30 cm² + 60 cm²

= 190 cm²
l = 10 cm; w = 5 cm; h = 3 cm

SA = 2(lw + wh + lh)
= 2[(10)(5) + (5)(3) + (10)(3)]

= 2(50 + 15 + 30)

= 2(95 cm² )
= 190 cm²
Find the surface area of the following rectangular prisms. Write
your answers in your notebook.

l = 8 dm; w = 7 dm; h = 5 dm

SA = 2(lw) + 2(wh) + 2(lh)

SA = 2(lw + wh + lh)
