Now-a-days, digital library has transformed the way of learning in
the society. Through digital libraries, people can access information
Introduction at their own convenience and comfort. In this presentation, the
social aspects of digital libraries are evaluated and the social factors
of digital libraries will be examined.
Digital libraries basically encompasses two complementary ideas;
Digital libraries are the set of electronic resources and associated
capabilities for creating, searching and using information. they are
extension of information storage and retrieval system.
Digital library Digital libraries are constructed –collected organized by a
community of users, and their functional capabilities support the
information needs and uses of that community. they are a
component of communities in which individuals and groups
interact with each other, using data, information, and knowledge
resources and systems.
Digital library alter the information flows in the society. The society
is now moving from the fixed world of paper documents to the fluid
world of digital documents.

and society
Expect much more
Deliver information faster
Copy, paste, forward (more often).

For institutions
Under the pressure to deliver contents in digital form (with or
without economic benefits)
Institutions involves publishers, database vendors, bookstores,
libraries and government institutions.
In traditional environment , publishers control the publication and
dissemination of information.
In the digital environment, who is in control? publisher, libraries,

More censorship/less censorship?
Should support the professional, educational and recreational
activities of diverse communities
Gap between those with and without access to digital information
(Digital Divide).
