Important Definitions
Habit is defined as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire.

Paradigm is an assumption, perception, frame of reference.

Maturity: It consists of the three phases -Dependence, Independence and

Inter-dependence.

Dependence: the paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others to
take care of us.

Independence: the paradigm under which we make our decisions and take
care of ourselves.

Interdependence: the paradigm under which we cooperate to achieve

something that cannot be achieved independently.

The 7 habits move progressively on a maturity continuum from

Dependence to Independence and Interdependence.

Be Proactive

• Proactive people think beforehand and are ready to face a situation.

• Reactive people react as per the situation and react on whims and
emotions.

• A proactive person can plan beforehand for an eventuality.

• If you are well prepared then you can face a situation or solve a
problem more efficiently.

Begin with the end in mind

• Principle of personal leadership.

• Start a task with set goals. Goals are important as they tell you where
to go. They help in focusing your approach as well.

• It is to begin today with the image, picture of the end of your life as
the criterion by which everything else is examined.

• It means to start with a clear understanding of your destination.

• If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take
just gets us to the wrong place faster.

• Develop a personal mission statement

Put first things first

• Because of multitude of tasks and assignments one needs to

prioritize. This helps in giving more attention to more important
things at hand.

• Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things

which matter least.”

• Organize and execute around priorities. The key is not to prioritize

what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.

Think win-win

• Win / Win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual
benefit in all human interactions.

• With a Win /Win solution, all the parties feel good about the decision
and feel committed to the action plan. Win /Win sees life as a
cooperative, not a competitive arena.

• Think about mutual benefits rather than your own benefit alone.
Everybody wants to have an upper hand in life and in business
dealings, which is practically not possible. So best way is to adopt
the middle of the road.

Seek first to understand then to be understood

First give other people ample time to express themselves. This will
help on many fronts. The other person gets enough opportunity to say
what he wants to say. You get an opportunity to understand other’s
perspective. You get enough time to strategize accordingly.

Principle of empathic communication. It is the key to interpersonal

communication.

We have to build the skills of empathic listening on a base of character

that inspires openness and trust. In empathic learning, we listen with
ears, eyes and heart. Diagnose before you prescribe. Seeking to
understand requires consideration, seeking to be understood takes
courage.

Synergy
Synergy is better than my way or your way. It’s our way. Synergy means
“two heads are better than one. Synergize is the habit of creative
cooperation”.

It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new

solutions to old problems. But it doesn’t just happen on its own. It’s a
process, and through that process, people bring all their personal
experience and expertise.

Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually.
Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to
discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater
than the sum of the parts.

Sharpen the saw

Skill building or practice is very important. Nobody is perfect and

perfection is a thing which can never be achieved in one’s lifetime.

Moreover, it always pays to practice as much as you can.

Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest

asset you have. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in

the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental,

and spiritual.
