9TH PRESENTATION
◦ In some way or form, almost all cultures have recognized the importance of
nature and its biological diversity for their societies and have therefore
understood the need to maintain it.
◦ Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance.
Why is Biodiversity important?
◦ And so, while we dominate this planet, we still need to preserve the
diversity in wildlife.
Why is Biodiversity important?
◦ It has long been feared that human activity is causing massive
extinctions.
◦ What is known, for sure, is that the world ecological system has been kept in
balance through a very complex and multifaceted interaction between a huge
number of species.
◦ This ecological prediction does not take into consideration the effects of
global warming which will further aggravate the situation.
Biodiversity
◦ Industrialized fishing has contributed importantly to mass
extinction due to repeatedly failed attempts at limiting the
fishing.
◦ Many commercial whaling nations have been part of this moratorium but
have various objections and other pressures to try and resume whaling.
Biodiversity
◦ While there might be “survival of the fittest” within a given species, each
species depends on the services provided by other species to ensure survival.
◦ Signed by 150 government leaders at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the
Convention on Biological Diversity is dedicated to promoting sustainable
development.
