Consequences of Action to Planetary Climate

Change

What I need to know

Climate change is the global phenomenon of climate transformation which are said
to be characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the Earth regarding
temperature, precipitation, and wind that are especially caused by human activities. As a
result of unbalancing the weather of the Earth, the sustainability of the
planet’s ecosystems is under threat, as well as the stability of the global economy and the
future of humankind in general.
Climate Change has been the defining issue of our time and we are also at a
defining moment. Without our actions today, adapting to the impacts brought about by
climate change will surely be more difficult and costly.
This module will help you explore the key concepts on topics that will guide you
answer the questions pertaining to problems and issues on climate change.

This module has three (3) lessons:

Consumption and Production:

1 Effects on Climate Change
___________________________________________________

Learning Concept
In this section, you will learn about the impact brought about by production and
consumption to the environment. Common knowledge is telling us that when deciding to
construct a concrete, we also are destroying the environment. First, the space or land,
we alter it by cutting down trees to clear the area. We change the landscape of the area
and if not killed, displaced the previous occupants of the area – the trees, the birds, the
ants, bees, butterflies, lizards, and earthworms to speak of the least.

The study called the Climate Public Expenditure and Institutional Review (CPEIR),
provides a general backdrop of projected increases in global temperature and its
corresponding effects:
 Globally, since 1950, ocean temperature has increased by roughly about 0.09oC
 Sea levels have also been rising by 15-20 cm from pre-industrial levels with the
rate nearly doubling from that of the past century.
As a small and archipelagic country, the Philippines is highly vulnerable to sea-
level rise. The report cited a study (Dasgupta et al. 2009) which listed the cities of San
Jose, Manila, Roxas and Cotabato among the top 10 most vulnerable cities in the East
Asia and Pacific Region to sea-level rise. This is very alarming since not just by seawater-
level, most low-lying areas both cities and urban in the country are also suffering from
flood.

On Consumption
Climate change is altering production systems and compromising food security
and nutrition for millions of people in the
Philippines, according to the United Nations
Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO).
José Manuel Fernandéz, FAO’s country
representative in the Philippines, said that amid
an annual population growth rate of 1.5 per cent,
the Philippines now have an estimated 109
million people, ranks 13th biggest population in
the world as of 2019. This means a bigger threat
The food on our plate.

to food security in the country. The more mouth to feed, the more food resources are
needed from the environment.
Imagine feeding not less than 109 million Filipinos for one meal, how many animals
must die and how many crops must be harvested just to put food on our plates? How
many liters of water must be fetched just to quench our thirst? The bigger the population,
the bigger also is the damage we could give to the environment. Moreover, wasting food
must now come to an end and must not be practiced.
On Production
Have you picture out how your dream house? The style, the elegance, the color,
the size, and the location? But before the dream house, have you thought of what are the
materials needed to finish building even just a small house? Probably you’ll think of
coconut lumber, good wood, nails, hollow blocks, plywood, cement, deformed steel bar,
corrugated sheet, sand and gravel. Its truly easy to name the materials but have we
thought on how were they produced? Let us try to look at the nails – made of iron. Before
it reaches the shelves in the hardware stores, it has to be mined at an identified area.
Trees and other plants must be cut to clear the area. This would include displacing or
worst killing the living animals occupying the area. Terrains of mountains and hills have
to destroyed for deep excavation just to get the best stock of iron materials. The
excavation goes on and on until it is already very difficult and costly to do so. From the
mine area, it then goes to the plant where the mined iron will be processed and produced
according to the desire of the people in the market.

Clearly we could tell that

production of certain goods and
services does clearly affect the
environment which results and
contributes to global climate
change.

At its core, production and

consumption contributes to
climate change and today,
Mineral mining in the Philippines climate change has also

mining-in-tubay-agusan-del-norte-philippines brought about problems to
production and consumption.
Understanding the problem is the only way to find the solution.

2 We Can Help Solve Climate

Change
_____________________________________________________

Learning Concept
In this topic, you will acquire knowledge on ways we can do in order to help solve
climate change. It is because of our acts that the environment has suffered a lot just to
satisfy our needs and wants. We have created the problem then probably we also should
find ways and means to find for the solutions.

Here are Simple Things We Can Do to Help Protect the Earth according to the
National Ocean Service of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:
 Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle + Refuse.

Reduce – if possible, we must stop buying for items with so much plastic packing.
Reuse – cut down on what we throw away, we might probably be able to still use it.
Recycle – plastics can also serve as nursery pots rather than just throwing it and
adding piles for our community landfill space. Above all, practice the bigger “R” –
REFUSE. If we can bring with us containers for food items, we probably can stop
production of plastic waste.

 Volunteer.

We can spare our time to volunteer for coastal clean-up and other clean-ups in our
respective community. We also all can volunteer to get involved in protecting our
watershed by tree planting.

 Educate.

When we further our own education, we can help others understand the importance
and value of our natural resources. We also can attend symposia and information
drives on environmental protection.

 Conserve water.

The less water we use, the less runoff and wastewater that would eventually end up in
the ocean. Waters from doing laundry can also be used in cleaning our comfort rooms
than just throwing it.

 Choose sustainable.

Learn how to make smart food choices. Eating leafy vegetables are far better than meat.
Why? We will just perhaps hurt horse radish (malunggay) tree for a plain native soup
but we have to kill a chicken in order to have a fried chicken for breakfast.

 Shop wisely.

Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag. Choose to buy items which uses
less plastic.

 Use long-lasting light bulbs.

Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Stop using the old
light bulbs for it costly on electrical consumption. Rather use LED bulbs. Also flip the
light switch off when you leave the room!

 Plant trees.

Trees provide food and oxygen.

They help save energy, clean the
air, and help combat climate
change. During high noon, many
would want to stay under the shade
of a tree, but nobody cares to plant
a tree.

 Don't send chemicals into our

waterways.

Choose non-toxic chemicals in the A man planting a tree.

home and office. Throw waste
properly. Battery acids should be thrown anywhere.

 Bike more.

Drive less. Pollution comes in the moment we start the engine of our motorcycles and
automobiles. Biking or walking helps the environment and it even makes us healthier.

Your Action Affects the

3 Environment
__________________________________________________

Learning Concept

In this lesson, you will acquire knowledge on how your act can affect the lives of
others especially the environment. We all know humans impact the environment in
several ways. Common effects include decreased water quality due to poor water control
management, increased pollution due to improper waste disposal, and greenhouse gas
emissions and depletion of our natural resources. Indeed, humans have contributed a lot
for the worsening of our environment which resulted to global climate change.

Based on reports by WWF-Philippines, the country's National

Solid Waste Management Commission, and the World Bank, a whopping 74 per cent of
plastic leakage comes from waste that has actually been collected. For example, of 2.7
million tonnes of garbage, 2.27 million tonnes are collected per year. Of this, 386,000
tonnes are still leaked into the ocean, mainly because of hauler dumping, when private
hauler companies unload their trucks into water bodies on the way to proper disposal
sites in order to cut costs, and because of poorly located dumps situated near waterways.

Meanwhile, uncollected garbage

in informal settlements is haphazardly
dumped elsewhere, while small
communities living near rivers and
water bodies dispose of personal waste
directly into the waterways or canals
and irrigations.

like seabirds. Humans also face the danger of ingesting persistent organic pollutants
(POPs) through eating seafood, as this links to the food chain. Plastics absorb
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), which are
POPs that will directly affect human health.

Moreover, marine debris also have negative impacts on revenue-generating

nature-based tourism, as well as the fishing industry. Fishermen in WWF-Philippines
project sites have commented that plastics are smothering coral reefs. This results in
ecosystem-wide impacts, which also affect their yield or catch.
