INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS SHEAR WALL:
In structural engineering, a shear wall is a vertical element of a system that is designed to resist
in-plane lateral forces, typically wind and seismic loads.
In high-rise structures, shear walls are widely used to resist earthquake forces. Such forces produce
large displacement, vibration and big moments in building which lead to an unsafe building
Most RC buildings with shear walls also have columns; these columns primarily carry gravity
loads .Shear walls provide large strength and stiffness to buildings in the direction of their orienta-
tion, which significantly reduces lateral sway of the building and thereby reduces damage to struc-
ture and its contents.
DESIGN OF SHEAR WALL FOR
HIGH RISE BUILDING
ADVANTAGES
Shear walls provide large strength and stiffness in the direction of orientation.
They are easy in construction
These walls minimize the damages to structural elements.
Also, requires less construction time.
These walls are thinner walls.
They are also lightweight.

LITERATURE REVIEW
PROF. P.A.NIKAMET-IMPORTANCE OF SHEAR WALL IN HIGH RISE BUILDING (2018)
It is observed from all the above study that building with shear wall along short middle span (model
2) in a14- story building is effective In seismic resistance compared to building without shear wall . joint
displacement and joint drift of the structure is also observed to be minimized by providing shear wall .

USONG SHEAR WALL IN MULTY STOREY BUILDING WITH THE HELP OF STAAD
PRO(2018)
Analyzed seismic performance of shear wall building with gravity induced lateral demand using open
sees software the the in elastic response of concrete shear wall building was investigated . From the result
it was demonstrated that a seismic ratcheting effect can developed and amplify in elastic displacement de-
mands. But the effect is more prevalent is coupled shear wall than cantilever shear wall.

forces in multistoreyed building systems. They can be made to behave in a ductile manner by adopting
proper detailing techniques.

SEISMIC ZONES IN INDIA
The latest version of seismic zoning map of India given in the earthquake resistant design code of India
[IS 1893 (Part 1) 2002] assigns four levels of seismicity for India in terms of zone factors. In other
words, the earthquake zoning map of India divides India into 4seismic zones (Zone 3, 4 and 5) unlike
its previous version, which consisted of five or six zones for the country. According to the present zon-
ing map, Zone 5 expects the highest level of seismicity whereas Zone 2 is associated with the lowest
level of seismicity.
