PROJECT TITLE

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF STRUCTURAL LIGHTWEIGHT

CONCRETE USING PUMICE AS A PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF COARSE
AGGREGATE

INTRODUCTION
Concretes whose unit weights are significantly lower than normal concretes are called as Light Weight
Concrete (LWC).

In general, concretes with a unit weight of less than 1800 Kg\m3 are classified as lightweight concrete.

Lightweight concrete is preferred especially for reducing the dead load of a structure and reducing the
cross-sectional areas of reinforced concrete structural elements to be used.

The use of structural lightweight concrete reduces the self-weight and helps to construct larger
structural units.

INTRODUCTION (CONTD.)
In our country there is the scarcity of land especially in large city. So we have to adopt the SLWC to
construct high rise building for accommodation of many people in one place

However, the use of pumice seems to be necessary for the production of cheaper and environment-
friendly SLWC with the compressive and tensile strengths similar to control SLWC containing only
NPC.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY:

• To study the properties of materials that used for structural lightweight concrete.
• To determine the mechanical property of concrete by partial replacement of
different percentage of pumice as coarse aggregate.
• To investigate the cost of structural lightweight concrete compared to normal
concrete.

LITERATURE REVIEW
 Ergul Yasar, Cengiz Duran Atis, Alaettin Kilic, Hasan Gulsen (26 November, 2002) This paper
presents a part of the results of an ongoing laboratory work carried out to design a structural
lightweight concrete (SLWC) made with basaltic pumice as aggregate and fly ash as mineral
admixtures.
 Kim Hung Moa, U. Johnson Alengarama, Mohd Zamin Jumaata (2015) investigated the
physical/mechanical properties and durability of lightweight aggregates concrete containing
waste oil palm shell aggregate.

 Isaac I. Akinwumi, Olasunkanmi M. Olatunbosun, Oluwarotimi M. Olofinnade, Paul O. Awoyera

(2014) performed an experiment for determining the density, water absorption capacity,
compressive strength and fire resistance of papercrete produced using waste newspaper and
office paper.

METHODOLOGY

For C-25 grade concrete by replacement weight percentages of 10, 20, 30 and 40% coarse aggregate
by volcanic pumice has already performed by Teshome Berhanu Masresha (Oct. 2019).

Therefore, this experiment will be performed by the replacement weight percentage of 15, 25, 35 and
45% coarse aggregate by pumice. For this experiment following tests will be required.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES:
• The use of pumice as the partial replacement of coarse aggregate in concrete will be more
economical.
• The density of concrete using pumice as partial replacement of coarse aggregate will be reduced than
normal concrete.
• The concrete can be used in high rise and earthquake resisting building because of having its low
weight.
• The concrete will be environment-friendly with adequate compressive and tensile strengths similar to
normal weight concrete.
