Research, presentation and articulacy skills

UNIT 1 – PEOPLE IN IT AND COMPUTING

So what will this unit entail?

▪ This first, two week unit, is all about developing

your research, presentation and articulacy skills, as well as
getting to know each other!

▪ It is about people in the IT, Computing and Digital sectors so

should hopefully be of interest to you

▪ You’ll also find out about the potential careers you could have

▪ The better your initial research, the better your presentation!

So what do you have to do?

▪ You will have 3 lessons to research and create

your presentation

▪ This may sound like a substantial amount of time but

remember, in reality you need to:
🢭 demonstrate appropriate research skills to provide detailed
information (not just choosing the first few results on Google!);
and
🢭 create a suitable presentation (animation, images and timed
transitions should be used but must be professional)
What is the presentation about?

▪ The presentation is broken down into two parts, details are on

the next couple of slides

▪ Both parts should be on the same PPT

▪ There are extension activities if you finish early – see Fronter

for details

▪ Don’t worry about writing down any details, all information we

are about to discuss is on Fronter
Presentation PART ONE

People, past or present, in the

IT/Computing/digital sector

These could be people who have created games,

developed technology, founded companies, been pioneers
in the industry etc. It is entirely up to you...! This is where
we will see the strength of your research skills. Hopefully
each presentation will be different to the next.
Presentation PART ONE
People, past or present, in the IT/Computing/digital sector

▪ The rules:
🢭Y ou must include information on five men AND five women
🢭 One slide per person
🢭 Information should include their date of birth, background info e.g. where they are
from/have lived, education etc. and their accomplishments/career i.e. why you have
chosen them
🢭 Each slide must contain an image of that person (plus any other relevant images
e.g. for shigeru miyamoto you could include an image of the Legend of Zelda or
Mario etc.)
🢭 The information must not be copied and pasted
🢭 You are limited to a maximum of 30 words per slide (make use of the notes
section for full notes)
Presentation PART TWO

Careers in the IT/Computing/digital sector

What jobs/careers are possible in this sector? E.g. app

designer, website developer, social media analyst etc.
Presentation PART TWO

Careers in the IT/Computing/digital sector

The rules:
🢭 You must include information on five careers
🢭 One career per slide
🢭 For each career explain what the responsibilities/tasks/day to day
activities of that role are
🢭 For each career you need to include an approximate average salary
(you could also include min/max and it is fine to have in $, but must
be researched so you don't just take the first value you find)
🢭 Any other information you think relevant
Get your research finished first. When done…

▪ Format your presentation so it is as professional as possible

▪ Consider the reason you are choosing a specific animation,

transition etc. and whether it is necessary and enhances the
PPT

▪ Be consistent – avoid different animations or transitions

▪ If possible, add timings to your transitions/animations so you

don’t have to worry about moving the slides on when
presenting
How should you manage your time?

▪ You have 3 periods (plus any other time after initial intro
lesson)

▪ It will be up to you to manage your time effectively. Everyone

will present to the class and if your presentation isn’t up to
scratch, you will be given a new topic to research in your own
time and present at a later stage…!

▪ My suggestion (and timings of such will be displayed on the

board) would be as follows:
How should you manage your time?

▪ 1st period – do your research work on people in

IT/Computing/Digital sectors.

🢭 Make notes/get information from the internet – it’s ok at this

point to copy and paste information onto a word doc or
something similar, you can adapt and change into your own
words later

🢭 Find and save relevant images

How should you manage your time?
Suggested timings

▪ 2nd period – do your research on jobs/careers in the

IT/Computing/Digital sectors

🢭 Again make notes/get information and find/save relevant images

How should you manage your time?
Suggested timings

▪ 3rd period – condense your notes down into 30 words per

slide and format

🢭 Make sure to write full notes (i.e. what you want to say) in the
notes section underneath or elsewhere if you’d prefer

🢭 Format your presentation so that it has appropriate timings and

animations
What about preparing to present?

▪ Your homework this week will be to prepare notes and

rehearse your presentation. I will be looking for:

🢭 A confident presentation (don’t worry if you’re nervous, most people will

be!). You will gain confidence by rehearsing your presentation a few times

🢭 Ensure you have notes ready to use. Your presentation slides are limited to
30 words per slide and you MUST NOT read from the board

🢭 You will hand in your notes next lesson so your homework can be checked
(effort grade out of 5). These notes should be in your own words and not
copied/pasted.
Need any reminders?

▪ A reminder of all the information we have been through is
