English as a medium of instruction, or EMI, refers to the teaching
and learning of content or academic subjects in the English 03
language in situations where English is not the majority language.
This definition covers a range of different situations such as 04
international preschools and kindergartens, immersions schools,
university courses in English, and even multilingual situations 05
where English is used as an educational and/or daily lingua

franca. Currently, the world is seeing a boom in EMI as an
educational model in universities, secondary schools and even
primary schools; however, the implications of this growing trend
remain severely under-researched.
The Concepts 01

English as a medium growing so fast due to practical reasons, first; most
academic research publish in English (about 94 per cent of 03
research in international, high-impact publications is in English),
second; (mistaken) view that EMI is a simple way to speed up 04
graduates' upward social and economic mobility. There are
also different research views about the effectiveness of EMI, one 05
study found out that only a modest increase in EMI students'

proficiency (average IELTS scores of the students taking part rose
by about 0.5 from the time of entry to almost four years later),
Some studies show that students understand more content when
learning in their first language, compared to studying in English.
There are also 13 facts stating the concern about the first and second
language acquisition, the difference between the two is that first 01
language acquisition is a child learning his native language,

whereas second language acquisition is learning a language besides
his native language.... All humans have the ability to acquire a

language. It is this ability that sets them apart from all other living
beings. 04

Insights 01

With this modern world we have, I believe that the medium of

instruction used to teach is English- universal language. It is an
internal medium of communication that has been used, it is being 03
understood and reorganized by everyone. It equips us with the tools
to travel and communicate more effectively in so many parts of the 04
world, which in turn, allows us to explore and travel more confidently
and to learn more about the countries and cultures we visit. English 05
can be used to promote and teach the Filipino ideals, culture, and
traditions which can imbed a love for one's country in the young. By 06

learning in English, the student will be bilingual or even be multilingual


and have an edge against other countries such as Vietnam, Korea, or
Thailand.
English will serve as an advantage for the students when they
travel abroad or even in their respective fields. Being bilingual 01
develops a person’s mind to become smarter (Kalkan, 2014).

Having it as a medium of instruction, the students will have
greater competence in English and be able to compete since the

world is globalizing (Monsod, 2009).
