INTRODUCTION
VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
 A virtual keyboard actually is a key-in
device, roughly a size of a fountain
pen, which uses highly advanced laser
technology.
 The new virtual keyboard technology
uses sensor technology and artificial
intelligence to let users work on any
surface as if it were a keyboard.
 In a virtual keyboard camera tracks the
finger movements of the typist to get
the correct keystroke.
 The first virtual keyboard was
invented by IBM in 1992.
WHAT IS VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
TYPING ?
 A virtual keyboard is a software component that allows
a user to enter characters. A virtual keyboard can usually
be operated with multiple input devices, which may
include a touch screen, an actual computer keyboard .
 Virtual keyboard is also called as projection keyboard.
 A Virtual Keyboard is a projection keyboard that is
projected and touched on any surface.
 A virtual keyboard consists of a laser that projects an
image of a keyboard onto a flat surface which can then
be typed on as if it were actually there.
 The keyboard watches your fingers movements and
translates that action into keystrokes in the device.
VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
FEATURES
 Most of the projection keyboards use a red
diode laser as a light source.
 Virtual keyboard size is usually
295mm*95mm.
 Virtual keyboard can be connected by using
either by USB ports or Bluetooth.
 Virtual keyboard works on lithium ion
batteries.
 Virtual keyboard capacity is 120 minutes of
continuous typing.
 Provide multilingual text input mechanism.
 Size is about a fountain pen.
 It takes up less desk space than a
conventional keyboard.
VIRTUAL KEYBOARD TECHNOLOGY

This system consists of three modules :-

1. The sensor module.

2. IR light source.
3. The pattern projecter.
1. SENSORE MODULE.

i. The Sensor Module serves as

the eyes of the Keyboard
Perception technology .

ii. The Sensor Module operates

by locating the user's fingers in
3-D space and tracking the
intended keystrokes.

iii. Keystroke information

processes and can then be
output to host devices.
2. IR LIGHT SOURCE.

i. The infrared light source emits a beam

of infrared light .

ii. This light beam is designed to overlap

the area on which the keyboard pattern
projector or printed image resides.

iii. This helps in recognizing the hand

movements and the pressing of keys.
3. PATTERN PROJECTOR

i. The pattern projector or optional

printed image presents the image of
the keyboard.

ii. This image can be projected on any

flat surface.

iii. The projected image is that of a

standard qwerty keyboard, with all
the keys and control functions as in
the keyboard
HOW DOES VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
WORKS?
Step1 : Template creation (Pattern Projector)

 A template of the desired interface is

projected onto the adjacent interface surface.

 The template is produced by illuminating a

specially designed, highly efficient holographic
optical element with a red diode laser.
Step2: Reference Plane Illumination(IR Light
Source)

 An infra-red plane of light is generated just

above, and parallel to, the interface surface. This
light is invisible to the user and covers a few
millimeters above the surface.

 When the user touches a key position on

the interface surface light is reflected from this
plane in the vicinity of the key and directed
towards the sensor module.
Step3: Map Reflection Co-ordinate (Sensor Module)

 Reflected light from user interactions with the

interface surface is passed through an infra-red filter and
imaged on to a CMOS image sensor in the sensor
module.

 Custom hardware embedded in the sensor chip (the

Virtual Interface Processing Core) then makes a real-
time determination of the location of the reflected light.

 The processing core can track multiple reflection events

simultaneously and can thus support both multiple
keystrokes and single keystrokes.
ADVANTAGES :-
 It can be projected on any surface or it can
type in the plain air.

 It can be useful in places like oprtion theatres

where low noise is essential.

 The typing does not require a lot of force, so

easing the strain on writs and hands.

 Maintenanceof the laser keyboard is much

easier.

 Water proof.
DISADVANTAGES :-

 Tactile feel is not possible.

 Dirty screens.

 The room in which virtual keybord is used

should not be very bright so that the keyboard
is property visible.

 It is very costly ranging from 150-200 dollars.

CONCLUSION :-
Projection key boards or virtual key boards claim to provide the
convenience of compactness with the advantages of a full-blown
‘QWERTY’ keyboard.

A virtual keyboard based on 3-D optical range camera.

Virtual Keyboard is also used in 6th sense technology device in

which it is not depends on surface. the feedback text and/or graphics
may be integrated with such projector, thus enabling truly virtual
working area.

 Thus virtual keyboards will make typing easier, faster, and almost a
pleasure.
