ACKNOWLEDGMENT
• It gives me great pleasure to express my gratitude towards my Biology
teacher Smt. G.K. Vinayagam for her guidance, support and
encouragement throughout the duration of the project. Without her
motivation and help the successful completion of this project would
not have been possible. I even thank my parents and my sister for
supporting me through their ideas and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan
for providing us such an opportunity to discover the little scientist
budding within us.
INTRODUCTION
Aspartame is an artificial non-saccharide sweetener 200 times sweeter
than sucrose, and is commonly used as a sugar substitute in foods and
beverages.
Aspartame is worldwide used as a controlling agent for cholesterol and
even to control blood glucose level in diabetic patents. Doctors all
around the world advise many of their patients to switch to aspartame
for healthy and balanced life even when they are aware of its dark side.

Aspartame is not suitable for consumption at cooking temperature as it

is highly unstable . So it is better used in cold food items.
Many people around the globe use this as a part of their diet as it is
cholesterol lower agent as prescribed by their diet experts.
Aspartame’s sweetness is 100 times the cane sugar.

But in this present scenario, living natural is all what is needed . Switch
to honey and other substitutes of sucrose which are naturally extracted
and causes no side effects.
EXPERIMENT
OBJECTIVE
The goal of this project is to determine the increase in blood glucose
level due to different types of sugar using optium xceed-instrument to
measure the blood glucose level
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Glass, water, milk, sugar free tablets (aspartame), spoon, cane sugar,
optium xceed-measuring instrument to mark the level of blood sugar
etc.
PROCEDURE
• DAY 1
Prepare a glass of milk and 1 table spoon of cane sugar. Take the initial glucose reading of the
patient with empty stomach before the intake of cane sugar dissolved in milk. After 2 hours of
digestion interval take the final reading of blood glucose level . Calculate the increase in blood
glucose level .
• DAY 2
Prepare a glass of cold milk with a sugar free tablet .
Source of sugar free tablet = Aspartame
1 Table spoon cane sugar = 1 Table spoon of Aspartame
Take the initial reading of the patient with empty stomach before the consumption of aspartame
dissolved in cold milk. Then after 2 hour of milk consumption take the final reading of blood glucose
level. Calculate the increase in blood glucose level.
Compare the increase in blood glucose level in both the cases and derive the conclusion.
OBSERVATION TABLE
S.No. Glucose intake with 2 Initial reading Final reading
hour time difference ( Before intake ) ( After intake )

1 Sucrose 157 mg/dl 270 mg/dl

2 Aspartame 138 mg/dl 147 mg/dl

CONCLUSION
The blood glucose level is increased by 113 mg/dl when cane sugar was used. But the
blood glucose level increased by just 9 mg/dl when aspartame was used
INFERENCE
Aspartame being stable at cold temperature causes no side effects and
even when it enters our body it still remains stable. It doesn’t react to
give any product in our body and also it is eliminated out of the body
through urine in stable form.
But prolonged use of aspartame causes health disorders.
BIOLOGICAL BARRIERS
FATE OF ASPARTAME
• Aspartame dissolves into solution and can therefore travel throughout the body
and deposit within any tissue. The body digests aspartame unlike saccharin, which
does not break down within humans.
• Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the
levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline.
Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests
and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a
result of aspartame poisoning.
• Side effects of aspartame – Headaches/migraines, Nausea, Abdominal pains,
Fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain), Sleep problems, Vision
problems, Anxiety attacks, Depression, Asthma/chest tightness.
Aspartame Detoxification Programme
• Remove all sugar-free products with aspartame from your diet.
• Learn to ‘read’ your body. begin recoding any health changes.
• Get a hair analysis
• Be happy with yourself.
• Detoxify
• Restore depleted nutrients.
• Exercise and get plenty of rest.
• Eat 75% raw foods at every meal.
DEMERIT OF SUCROLOSE
Despite approval of the FDA, many people surely suffer from the
sucralose toxicity and several symptoms of sucralose allergy. Following
are the various sucralose dangers.
• Gastrointestinal problems like bloating, nausea and diarrhea
• Skin irritation, rashes, hives, swelling and itching
• Breathing difficulties, wheezing
• Runny nose, cough
• Palpitation, chest muscle pain, itchy eyes
• Anxiety, depression, mood swings, sudden onset of anger
Apart from these, following are several other side effects of
sucralose that can also be fatal and life threatening.
• Enlarged liver and kidneys
• Reduced growth rate
• Atrophy of lymph follicles in the thymus and spleen
• Increased cecal weight
• Hyperplasia of the pelvis
• Decreased fetal body weights
• Decreased placental weights
• Extension of pregnancy period
• Decreased red blood cell count
• Aborted pregnancy or still birth
