ABSTRACT
Over the past few decades, our research and technical skills has
increased a lot. Even today we are innovating and developing the
new trends in technology in pursuit of a safe and sustained
future as the innovation leads to invention. Throughout this
evolution, engineers are in constant research for new and better
building materials and carbon fiber is one of these materials,
which is used with some other fibers and a specific polymer to
form a high performance composite mixture. The aim of this
research paper is to study the benefits of using carbon fiber in
different types of industry & this paper also overcomes the
drawbacks of using other building materials. The amazing
properties of carbon fiber such as high tensile strength, high
stiffness, low weight & high resistance to chemical and
temperature makes it one of the most popular materials in
construction industry due to these properties it has enormous
applications in military, medical science, construction,
automobile, aircraft industry etc. It actually works as a robust
building material. It produces the structure that possesses both
flexibility and durability. It is incredibly strong that’s why it can
also withstand earthquakes. It is more flexible in wind than the
regular structures. It is also listed in the top 20 engineering
achievements of 20th century. It is definitely the next generation
building material as it can replace steel in the many structures
and can reduce its construction and maintenance cost.

C OMPONENTS OF C ARBON
FIBRE IN CONSTRUCTION
Carbon fiber is a material consisting of fibers
around 5–10 μm in d ia m e te r a nd c o m p o sed
m o stly o f c a rb o n a to m s. C a rb o n atoms are
b o n d e d together in crystals that are aligned
parallel to the lo ng a xis o f the fib e r.

It is this crystal alignment that gives the fiber high

strength-to- volume ratio.

DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, S.MVIT

7
Carbon fibers are also composited with other
materials, such as graphite, to form reinforced
carbon-carbon composites, which ha v e a v e ry
hig h he a t to le ra nc e .

To produce a carbon fiber, the carbon atoms are

b o n d e d together in crystals that are more or less
aligned parallel to the fiber's long axis as the
crystal alignment gives the fiber a high strength-
to-volume ratio

Inferenc es from the c ase
study
 Based on the case study undertaken, it was
observed that local contractors have enough
knowledge a n d proficiency in conducting
retrofitting works particularly on carbon fiber
sheet a n d carbon fiber plate installation by
following the correct methodology. However,
quality a n d workmanship c a n b e further
improved through project supervision by the
engineers in both contractor a n d government
side.

 In terms of plan review, some drawings a n d

specifications were not in a c c o r d a n c e with the
provisions in the DPWH/JICA bridge repair manual
particularly on the prescribed spacing between
carbon fiber plates in order to effectively remove
entrapped air. Measurements should also b e
rechecked o n site since some dimensions are
incorrect. Furthermore, some tests included in the
Quality Control Program n e e d e d to check the
efficacy of the cond ucted repair were
unperformed a n d will b e removed from the
contract.

 Carbon fiber is a relatively new a n d expensive

 In m a n y cases, the cost of this material is
