IMPLEMENTATATION OF virtual reality (VR)

in museum
Abstract
The past few years have seen an increase in the use of
virtual reality (VR) in museum environments in an attempt for
museums to embrace technological innovations and adapt to
the challenges of the digital era.
The aim of this paper is to explore who are responsible for a
museum’s objects and narratives. The aim of this paper is to
explore the practices, experiences, and perceptions of museum
professionals on the use of VR technology in museums, their
perceived advantages and challenges of such technologies, and
their vision for the future of technology in museums.

Introduction
A museum is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and
other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or historical importance and makes
them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or
temporary.
 Most large museums are located in major cities throughout Ethiopia and more
local ones exist in smaller cities, towns.
The continuing acceleration in the digitization of Information, combined with
the increasing capacity of digital information storage, is causing the traditional
model of museums (i.e. as static “collections of collections” of three-dimensional
specimens and artifacts) to expand to include virtual exhibits and high-resolution
images of their collections for perusal, study, and exploration from any place with
Internet.

BACKGROUND
The first museum in Ethiopia was opened in Adiss
Abeba in 1936 being part of the national library. A few
presents from the royal family were set to the exhibition.
The establishment of the Institute of Archaeology in
1946 has contributed a lot for the development of the
museum. French archaeologists had a great role in the
finding of very important historical and cultural
artifacts. The museum was transferred to the lounge of
today’s National Bank of Ethiopia.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Ethiopia has many cultural and historical heritages
among which museums are worth mentioning. The
collection on show at the national museum is ranked
among the most important in sub- saharan Africa, but
sadly many of its exhibit are poorly labeled and its far
from viewing point and dusty. And their web sits does
not work.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
To build a system that will provide a 3D digital museum that will
present the museum to people live on their computer systems.
To produce a system that will help the user to retrieve information
when needed and timely.
To create a system that will help the museum manager to
conveniently add items and their information to the large
database so that online visitors can walk through the museum and
also view the item information.
To provide a system that will keep record of the item in a well
formatted manner. E.g. according to the year, origin, item title etc.

General objective
The general objective of the study is to assess the
current practices and challenges of Ethiopia museum
and use more technology like virtual reality because if
a pandemic like covid -19 occurs and their well be a
restriction and when the museum closed people can
enjoy from their home by using virtual reality.

SCOPE OF STUDY
The scope of the study to make the ethiopian
museums equal to other museums around the glop.
 And use 3D digital museum that puts the physical
museum live right on the computer system and people
if they want to research about ethiopia heritage and
cultural sites could be available for online visitors.

LIMITATIONS
The limitations are Cost of VR devices for low income
people. Graphical limits Most VR graphics are
comparatively worse when compared to all existing
consoles and they look at least a decade old. Lack of
understanding VR is still a fairly new concept. While its
applications seem far and wide, each technology faces a
limitation that cannot be accounted for. So far, VR has been
facing its greatest one.

Method and Tools
Internet technologies provide tremendous potential to
virtual visitors through ubiquitous access via the
World Wide Web to a virtual museum environment.
Additionally, the broadband Internet connections
allow the transfer of rich media files.
Thus, the virtual visitors can have access to virtual
museum exhibitions via a PC from anywhere.

SIGNIFICANCE OF project
The development of this project is not done for just a test
of knowledge; instead the project has several
significances which we will give attention to in this
section.
 Principally, the significance of the work is to collect,
preserve, interpret, and display items of cultural, artistic,
or scientific significance for the education of the public
Diversified natural and cultural heritages, the sources are
not getting enough attention and being promoted well.

The functions of the existing system

To explore museum bring anyone and everyone virtual tours and
online exhibits of some of the most famous museums around
the world. Now, you get “go to the museum” and never have to
leave your couch when the museums are closed .

Players of the existing system
The players of existing systems are many museums around
the world partner with Google Arts & Culture’s collection
includes the British Museum in London, the Van Gogh
Museum in Amsterdam, the Guggenheim in New York City,
and literally hundreds of more places where you can gain
knowledge about art, history, and science. This collection is
especially good for students who are looking for ways to
stay on top of their studies while schools are closed.

Weaknesses of the existing system
Virtual Reality is one of the most exciting technologies of
the current generation. With its continuous evolution and
ongoing developments,
The limitations are Cost of VR devices for low income
people. Graphical limits Most VR graphics are comparatively
worse when compared to all existing consoles and they look
at least a decade old. Lack of understanding VR is still a
fairly new concept. While its applications seem far and wide,

Conclusion
Virtual museums can respond in various ways to visitors’ needs. With the
use of VR, it can provide an entertaining and educational experience and
enrich the museum experience by enabling an intuitive interaction with
the virtual museum artifacts. The benefits are noteworthy for museum
curators and various groups of end-users, like students, specialists and
tourists Virtual museums have the potential to preserve and disseminate
the cultural information in an effective and low-cost way through
innovative methods and tools. They do not aim at replacing the physical
museums, but they act complementary. Virtual museums that are an
engaging medium with great appeal to various visitors’ groups can
promote the ‘real sites’ by providing information about museum
exhibitions and offer an enhanced display of museums’ arte facts through
emerging technologies.
