    The evolution of elephants started in Africa with Paleomastodon existing 35-36 million years ago, having a small trunk and upper and lower tusks. Over time, bodies increased in size and different species evolved such as Deinotherium with downward curved tusks and Gomphotherium with large trunks and shovel-like lower tusks. The largest proboscidean was Stegodon at almost 4 meters tall. Mammoths were adapted for cold weather with thick skin and upward curving tusks, while modern elephants are Asian Elephas and African Loxodonta.
