Pump and Pipe Selection.

The correct pump and pipe selection go hand in hand for successful dewatering
operation.

This deal with the typical processes of selecting both

How do I select the right pump for this job?

What pipe do I select in order to achieve optimum performance from the pump?

What are the main factors that must be considered when selecting the best system?

Pipe Selection

The main points for considering correct Pump &

Discharge Pipe are:

1. What is the STATIC HEAD of the mine?

2. How much DISCHARGE FLOW rate must be achieved?
3. What is the length of the discharge pipeline from
the pump unit to the discharge point?
4. Selecting the correct pipe diameter.
5. Selecting the Pump.

Pipe Selection
The answer is EASY…
..with the right information from the Mine Plan and Mine Planning Department.

1. What is the STATIC HEAD of the mine pit location?

Q: What is STATIC HEAD?

A: Static Head is the distance from the Mine pit floor to the top of the mine pit including the
highest RL that the discharge pipeline will have to go over.

Example: the pit floor is RL -10.

the top of the pit is RL 70.
the point of discharge from the pipeline is RL 65.
Important note:
HEAD relates to pressure. Pressure has effect on the specification of the pipe selected. 10 meters of
HEAD is equivalent to 100kPA.

So the Mine Pit might look like this from a side profile.

2. How much discharge flow rate must be achieved?
This depends:
 On how much water is in the pit at the time
 How much rainfall is expected at the time of the year.
But mostly the answer is, as much as possible, as fast as possible.

6

Pipe Selection.
3.What is the length of the discharge pipeline from the pump unit to the
discharge point?
 Do not measure a straight line from the pump to the discharge point.
 If the pipeline is to follow the haul road out of the pit, from the pump to the discharge
point, simply measure the haul road plus any additional length necessary to reach the
discharge point.

Pipe Selection.
4. Selecting the correct pipe diameter.
Selecting the correct diameter pipe depends on the discharge flow
capability of the pump unit at the head duty required.
For Example: at the best performance point of a Model 400, the head
would be approximately 110m and the flow rate may be between 240
and 260 liters per second.
240 liters per second is a very large quantity of water to flow through a
pipe every second. So we must assume that a large diameter pipe
would be required. When selecting pipe, HDPE ( high density
polyethylene) pipe is the most common on the market and is measured
at the outside diameter or OD.
The length of pipe will also affect the selection of pipe diameter.

Pipe Selection
Applying the information using a typical
example.
What is the STATIC HEAD of the location in the mine pit? 80m
How much DISCHARGE FLOW rate must be achieved? As much as
possible.
What is the length of the discharge pipeline from the pump unit to
the discharge point? From pump to discharge pipe we would need to
use 800 m of pipe.
Selecting the correct pipe diameter.
Please recommend the optimum pipe so that we get the best
performance from the pump.

SELECTING THE CORRECT PUMP

 What is the STATIC HEAD of the location in the mine pit? 80m
So now look for a curve that will perform above 80m.
The model 385, 390, 400 and 420 are capable of this performance.

 How much DISCHARGE FLOW rate must be achieved? As much as

possible.
The 420 has the best capability of high flow at this head but the 400
maybe as good for a economically point of view.
The 385 and 390 may be a viable option if flow rates of 120 to 150 l/sec are
acceptable.

SELECTING THE CORRECT
DISCHARGE PIPE

 What is the length of the discharge pipeline from the pump unit
to the discharge point? From pump to discharge pipe we would need
to use 800 m
A large Pipe diameter is required

 Selecting the correct pipe diameter.

Please recommend the optimum pipe so that we get the best out the
pump.
Pressure will be in excess of 800 kPa,

SELECTING THE CORRECT
DISCHARGE PIPE
The 400 has a shut of head of 150 meters, therefore the pump is capable of attaining a
high of 1500 kPA. When selecting a pipe from PN refers to pressure rating and PN 16
would be suitable in this application. PE relates to the density of the material used in the
manufacture of the pipe. Example PE 80, PE 100.

SELECTING THE CORRECT Solutions

DISCHARGE PIPE

We have determined that the pressure rating required is PN16 and PE100.
PE 100 density pipe is the more commonly manufacture pipe.

Now we determine pipe diameter.

Pipe manufacturers have calculated and compiled figures relating to friction
characteristics caused by the rate of flow of water through all common
diameters of HDPE pipe.
Friction is measured in meters per hundred meters (m/100m) according to
the flow rate.

Weir Minerals Multiflo uses the Australian Pump Manufacturers Handbook for
calculation and /or figures compiled by Vinidex pipe manufacturers.
Information obtained from these figures is plotted onto the pump performances
curve in order to determine Total Dynamic Head and /or Friction head. The
curve produced from the plotted information allows us to see which pipe is
best suited to the duty required and permits the pump to operate at its best.

 Friction Head is the friction/resistance created by the flow of

the water through the discharge pipe or hose. Expressed in
Metres per 100 meters.

Friction between the flow of the water and

increases as flow increases.

50 0.29 2.32
100 1.02 8.16
150 1.88 15.0
200 3.60 28.8
250 5.84 46.7
300 7.60 60.8

Now plot the figure in red on the 400 curve.

Remember, rule a line across the curve at the 80 metre static head level.
The formula is TDH= SH+FH, Therefore at flow rate 50, add 2.32m to
80m=82.32m.
At 100 add 8.16m to 80m= 88.16.
Ok so keep going and you end up with a curve looking like this.

I have also added in the plot curve for 355mm pipe to compare the increased
performance by increase pipe diameter.

SUMMARY: SELECTING THE CORRECT
DISCHARGE PIPE

From these four points and the use of the pipe friction figures:
 STATIC HEAD of the mine?
 DISCHARGE FLOW rate required?
 Length of the discharge pipeline from the pump unit to the discharge
point?
 Pipe diameter.

We have been able to:

1. Determine the correct pump for the application.
2. Determine the correct discharge pipe for the application, considering both
pipe diameter and pressure rating.
3. Identify what flow rate can be achieved from the pump
4. Identify what speed to run the pump to achieve the desired head and flow.
5. Attain the most out the pump.
