FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH
• Final stage leading to the failure of the material
• It is generally consumed in the crack growth phase.
• It may stop if the loads are small
• Rate of growth becomes large enough, fatigue sitrations can be seen on the
fracture growth.

The following effects change the rate of
growth:-

STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR
• Fatigue crack growth depends on the stress intensity factor range and the
maximum stress intensity factor
• The two factors are combined known as driving force
• Driving force is successful as long as the stress intensity factors are correlated

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS
Corrosion Fatigue:- Chemical reactions induce pits which act as stress raisers.
Corrosion also enhances crack propagation.
Solutions-
a. Decrease corrosiveness of medium.
b. Add protective surface coating.
c. Add residual compressive stresses.
