BODY SYSTEM
Body system consists of a
group of organs that carry out
a task
Sometimes it is called
ORGAN SYSTEM
Circulatory System

• Circulatory System is a very important system in our body

• Ever wonder how you can burn your food?
• Ever wonder how you can transfer oxygen that you inhale to whole of your body parts?
• We have a substance that carries out the task named BLOOD
• Circulatory system works to circulate the BLOOD
• BLOOD delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells

• Please explain the consequences of having blood-loss!

Circulatory System of Human Body

• What do the blue and red line

mean?
Heart
● Heart is very essentials in our body
● It is the centre of circulatory system
● It is the one that can produce PULSE, it functions like
PUMP to our blood
● Its size is around our fist of hand
● HEART RATE: how many pulses your heart produces
in 1 minute
Heart
There are 6 stages process in the circulatory system:

1. Your heart pumps blood to the lungs

2. The blood receive oxygen that we inhale and insert to
the lungs
3. The oxygen-riched blood come back to the heart
4. It is ready to be distributed to all the other parts, so the
blood travels outside the heart
5. The blood transfer oxygen to our cell
6. The blood now low in oxygen but rich in carbon dioxide,
come back to the hearts
HISTORY of Circulatory System

• Galen was a Greek doctor/physician in the 2nd century who tended to the
Emperors in ROme.
• He first thought that the body had two one-way systems for blood.
• He said that the dfirst system had brightly coloured blood (with oxygen) and
the second one is the blue coloured blood with no oxygen. It came from liver
and gave the body food
HISTORY of Circulatory System

• Then came Ibnu al-Nafis who first questioned about the Galen’s
belief
• He was the 13th century Syrian Physician

• Along with Michael Servetus, a 16th-century Spanish physician

• He believed that there was a circulatory system that took blood from
heart to the lungs and back
• But they thought it did not go to any other parts of the body
HISTORY of Circulatory System

• The discrovery that heart pumped blood everywhere in the body was
only made in 17th-century by William Harvey -an english physician-
• He carried out a lot of experiments due to his questions
• One of the main experiment was how much blood flowed through
the heart
• He published his ideas in 1628 but many people refused to believe
him
• Eventually, he is right
HEART RATES IN DIFFERENT VERTEBRATES

Every creature that has a backbone are called vertebrates

Human and some of animals included as vertebrates

ANSWER THE QUESTION IN PAGE 12

HEART RATES IN DIFFERENT VERTEBRATES
Generally the larger the animal, the larger the heart.

Explanation:

Large animals have large chest cavities, capable of supporting large hearts.

And they need them too - big animals like whales have a lot of cells that need blood
delivered to them.

Humans, being not too big, not too small, have a moderate heart size - about the size
of a grown man's fist. We don't need big hearts because we don't have big bodies;
having a heart that reflects this allows our chest to support other organs like the
lungs.

As an interesting side note, the larger the animal, the slower its heart beats, and the
smaller the animal, the faster its heart beats.

A blue whale's heart beat, for example, hovers around 9-10 beats per minute while the
Etruscan tree shew, an animal so small it can fit in the palm of your hand, is known to
have a heart rate of over 1000 beats per minute.
BLOOD VESSELS

1. Arteries: carry the blood away from

heart to the capillaries
2. Capillaries: tiny blood vessels. Deliver
water, oxygen, and nutrients to the body
cells. Carry away the waste products from
cell
3. Veins: carry blood away from
capillaries back to the heart

There is no blue blood. All blood is red
