Son of King James I.

His wife: Catholic French.

His order to the army during the French civil war.

Taxes: the conflict with the Parliament.

1629: suspended the Parliament for 11 years (11 years of


Tyranny).

Conflict with the Puritans.

James I belief in the Divine Right of Kings.
Long Term James I allowed his friends to rule the country.

Causes 1621: James I called the Parliament to discuss the marriage of


Charles I to his French, Catholic wife.
Charles I: his character, Divine Right of Kings.

1629: suspending the Parliament for 11 years.

Raising money: heavy fines, buy titles.

1635: Ship Money- not only for the coastal cities, but for the
Short Term whole country as well.

Causes The conflict with the Puritans.

The conflict with the Scots.

1641: recalling the Parliament to raise money.

1642: Charles I marching to the Parliament to arrest his 5 big


critics.
Refusing the Common Book of Prayers imposed by Charles I.

Clashed with Charles I attempt to enforce Anglican reforms to their


church.

1639- 1640: the Bishop Wars.

The Role of 1643: made alliance with Oliver Cromwell.

the Scots 1646: captured Charles I.

1647: Charles I escaped to raise another army.

1648: Cromwell’s army defeated Charles I and the Scots.

1649: Charles I was executed for high treason.

Witnessed to conflicts Charles I had with Parliament and Puritans.

He gathered the Puritans and made an army of 1000 to fight the King.

1644: won the battle of Marston More.

The Role of 1645: heavy defeat of Charles I in Naseby.

Oliver 1649: after executing Charles I, parliament took power, Cromwell


became “lord protector” of England, and England was called
Cromwell “Protectorate”.

Cromwell was Puritan: he put Puritan thought into action (tolerance, no


bishops, reform education, religious freedom).
