Vitamins and

Minerals in Human
Health
BY (NAME)
Introduction

 Vitamins and minerals are crucial nutrients needed by the body to function
efficiently
 Often needed in trace amounts
 Low or high consumption may lead to negative effects
 What is their role?
Vitamins

 A vitamin is any organic molecule or a set of closely related molecules (termed

vitamers) that is an essential micronutrient needed by an organism to in trace
amounts to function properly in its metabolic processes.
Vitamins

 Vitamins can be divided into water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins

 Water-soluble vitamins can travel freely within the body and excesses are
often excreted through the kidneys.
 The body requires water-soluble vitamins in frequent by small doses.
Water-Soluble Vitamins

 Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin B1, also called thiamine.

 Role?
 What are the sources of the examples such as vitamin B1?
Fat-Soluble Vitamins

 Fat-soluble vitamins have a high propensity for accumulation in the body’s

cells
 Higher chance for toxicity
 Examples are vitamin A, D, E, K
 Their roles?
Minerals

 They have a critical role in homeostasis

 Essential minerals-macro and micro minerals
 Examples of macro:
 sodium
 Chloride
 Phosphorus
 Potassium
Minerals

 Trace minerals include iron and zinc

 Their roles?
 Iodine in growth regulation
Link to healthcare conditions and
Nursing
 Deprivation or excessive supply-deficiency diseases
 Vitamin B
 Vitamin C
 Vitamin B2
Link to healthcare conditions and
Nursing
 Minerals are inorganic nutrients
 Deficiency leads to various conditions
 Iodine deficiency and goiter, fetal development
 Iron
 Nursing interventions must recognize the role of these minerals and vitamins
Conclusion

 Vitamins and minerals are critical for normal body function

 Excesses can lead to toxicity
 Deficiencies lead to deficiency diseases
 Therefore, management of these conditions must understand the role they
play in the body
 Need for the right dietary supply or use of approved supplements.
