What is an Essay?

An essay is a short non-fiction, non-


imaginary work about a subject. It may be
classified by tone and style as formal or
informal.
It has many purposes depending on what
the writer wants to write about and how
he/she wants to affect the readers.
Additional information

Essays are commonly used as literary


criticism, political manifestos, learned
arguments, observations of daily life,
recollections, and reflections of the
author.

It is the opening part of the write-up


that shows the topic sentence of the
essay or the thesis statement.

An essay includes body paragraphs,


which develop the main idea (thesis or
claim) of the essay. This is where the
writer gives details that is supporting
his/her thesis/claim.

Conclusion 0001

An essay ends with a brief conclusion,


which brings the essay to a logical end.
A conclusion should:
1. Predict an outcome to the main idea
2. Give an opinion
3. Quotations

Formal Essay

●This is known as impersonal essay.


●The content is informative and scientific in
nature.

● This is known as familiar or personal essay.
● It expresses personal experiences or observation
on human nature.
● Purpose: to entertain rather than to inform.

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

● It is an essay that illustrates by using sensory


words in order to bring to the reader’s
imagination what is being talked about.

Filipino?
An essay by Francisco Benitez
• June 4, 1887 – June 30, 1951
• Born in Pagsanjan, Laguna
• Parents are Higinio Benitez and
Soledad Francia
• Studied at Philippine Normal
College in 1904
• He was married to Paz Marquez
Francisco of Lucena, Tayabas, who is also a
Benitez distinguished writer.
• An outstanding educator, author, editor,
and the first dean of the School of
Education of the University of the
Philippines

• As an educator, Benitez believed that


education could make the country stable
and progressive and that every Filipino
Francisco child should have the right to an
education in order to develop his
Benitez potentials to the full.
