THE CAUSES OF

ABSENTEEISM OF
GRADE 7 STUDENTS
IN THE BLENDED
LEARNING CLASS
IN VALUES EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION
• Increased absenteeism has been a side effect of remote learning in
many schools, and some teachers have internalized guilt as a result.
Because the causes for increased absenteeism during the pandemic
are diverse, these self-assessments are unjust. Despite the difficulties
posed by Covid-19, many teachers throughout the world are
reaching out to absent students and encouraging them to return to
class. They're figuring out how to make previously absent students
feel connected, valued, and cared for. Teachers must be aware of the
different methods students can gain credit for distance learning
participation. This understanding will assist teachers in keeping their
students engaged and assisting them in achieving academic
achievement.
INTRODUCTION
• Many students are absent in class because they do not have a device to access
the internet, some of them are working, have responsibilities at home, and
don’t have financial support. We must learn how school or district assists
families in obtaining the technology required for distance learning. The
pandemic has brought attention to the digital gap, or unequal access to
technology. Some schools are able to supply a device to each student. Other
schools can only supply one device per household, forcing multi-child families
to figure out how to divide computer access among numerous children. Some
of the students take the modular class and some schools are open to face-to-
face classes. When absent students return to class, they need to know that
their teachers will be there for them on a regular basis. Psychological security
is crucial. Being constant in a real-time distance learning classroom and
students must shower with love, care, concern, and excellent instruction.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to identify the causes of absenteeism of grade 7 students in the
Blended Learning Class at Tinawagan National High School. Specifically, it seeks to
answer the following questions:
• 1. What are the profiles of the respondents in terms of:
1.1 Sex
1.2 Age
• 2. What are the reasons/problems being encountered by the students in not
attending blended learning class in Values Education?
• 3. Why students don’t want to attend a blended learning class in Values Education?
• 4. What might be the motivation for the students to regain their interest in
attending class?
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
• This study applied qualitative descriptive research to describe a phenomenon and its
characteristics, which is more concerned with what rather than how or why something
has happened. According to Sandelowski, qualitative descriptive research should be seen
as a categorical, as opposed to a non-categorical, alternative for inquiry is less
interpretive than an interpretive description approach because it does not require the
researcher to move as far from or into the data and, does not require a conceptual or
highly abstract rendering of the data, compared to other qualitative designs.
• The researcher gathered information about the study by using written interviews with the
respondents, specifically those selected Grade 7 students from Tinawagan National High
School. After that, the researcher collected all the data gathered from the respondent and
used a thematic process to analyze the result of the interview to determine the causes of
absenteeism of Grade 7 students in the blended learning class in Values Education.
METHODOLOGY
SUBJECT OF THE STUDY
• The subject of the study was Grade 7 students from Tinawagan National High
School. The respondents in this study are five (5) 2 girls and 3 boys of Grade 7
Pancho Students.
• Cluster sampling is utilized in this study, wherein the selected Grade 7 students
were identified as respondents with a total number of 5. According to Frey
(2018), cluster sampling is a probability sampling technique in which all
population elements are categorized into mutually exclusive and exhaustive
groups called clusters. Clusters are selected for sampling, and all or some
elements from selected clusters comprise the sample. This method is typically
used when natural groups exist in the population (e.g., schools or counties) or
when obtaining a list of all population elements is impossible or impractically
costly.
METHODOLOGY
SETTING OF THE STUDY
• This research was carried out at the Tinawagan National High School, which is
located at. This school operates in the city under the supervision of the principal
Mr. Joel P. Batucan.
METHODOLOGY
SOURCES OF DATA
• In order to easily organize the qualitative information obtained for the study, the
researcher used a written interview with guide questions to obtain the data needed
for the study which consists of questions asking about the causes of absenteeism of
Grade 7 students in the blended learning class. After collecting the data, the
researcher analyzed the result to determine the experiences of the selected student.
• Because of the pandemic, the researchers conducted the online written interview
using messenger. According to Hewson (2010), online interviews are used in primary
Internet-Mediated Research (IMR), which means they are used to collect original
data via the Internet with the intention of analyzing it to provide new evidence in
relation to a specific research question. Scholarly, online interviews are conducted in
accordance with ethical research and privacy guidelines, such as obtaining informed
consent from research participants prior to participating in an interview.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Common Reasons Why Students are Absent in Blended Learning Class

No Electronic Device and Internet Connection Poverty Family Responsibilities Students Get Lazy
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
No Electronic Device or Internet Connection
• Not all students have access to electronic devices. Given today's modern, tech-
driven world, many of them still can't afford it. And even if this is the case, access to
a strong and stable internet connection is only available in first-world cities and
countries. Students living in rural areas, especially in remote areas, have little
access to the Internet.
Poverty
• poverty is one of the main reasons why students are unable to attend classes both
online and offline. The lack of proper education and high-paying jobs for students
remains the biggest obstacle. Not everyone was born with a silver spoon. Many
families cannot afford to buy laptops, mobile phones, etc. that their children can
use for online lessons. To make matters worse, not everyone can afford to pay for an
internet connection.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Family Responsibilities
• As classes move more or less online, students are given assignments to do at home. They
are tasked with doing household chores and helping parents make money, making it
impossible to attend online classes. This will reduce student attendance. If life was
difficult before the pandemic, it's even harder now. And it's only natural to know that
students are forced to work to help their parents. In other cases, the student is a student
who is at home to take care of his siblings and is absent from class.
Students get lazy
• Admit it, we all sometimes feel lazy when we are at home and students are no exception.
Students think it's okay not to check in because the class is online. They believe their
existence is no longer important. Instead, they spend their time scrolling through various
social media accounts. Others choose to gamble, watch television, or engage in other non-
educational activities. They do lazy check-in, homework, and schoolwork. They lack the
motivation to attend their online courses because they have a misunderstanding.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
• The study finds out that the majority of students are 13 years old
and old enough to understand the lesson, they use a blended
learning modality. Also, the majority of students is no internet
connection. And based on the findings, the government must
subsidize the gadget and internet connections, Parents should be
advised to monitor the activities of their children and youngsters,
especially after their classes, and support their child’s studies, the
teachers should minimize the activity or least the activity to do, the
Department of Education must create a memorandum or order to
address the students during new normal.
