Introduction
 Justin is a super-franchiser for a large chain of soup-and-sandwich shops.

 He owns twelve shops in the same region, having invested $2 million to own these stores.

 Half of the investment in the stores came from inheritance another half of the money was borrowed

The Problem
 Justin wants to increase his revenue by around 15% to pay his debt payments and earn a living

 He is satisfied with his managers operations but is concerned that they weren’t trying hard enough to achieve good customer service by
encouraging the order takers at the stores to pay more attention to customers.

Action Taken
 Justin decided that he shouldn’t micromanage by telling the store managers how to motivate their staffs. But decided to discuss with his
managers what he wanted—more profit by doing a better job of motivating the order takers and cashiers.

 He also pointed out to his twelve store managers that he would be rewarding and recognizing their accomplishments in boosting store
revenues.

Rewards for Managers
 A wall plaque designating the manager as a “Store Manager of the Year”

 A year’s membership in an athletic club for the manager and a spouse or partner

 A bonus equivalent to two percent of annual salary

 An iPad

 An expense paid trip for the manager and his family for one day at an amusement park or a theme park

Consequences
 Justin received several e-mail messages from managers acknowledging an appreciation of his program, yet no burst of enthusiasm.

 Justin thought to himself, “I guess the managers don’t understand how great it feels to be recognized for making a tough financial target.
When they earn their recognition awards, I’m sure I will see a lot more enthusiasm.”

What advice can you give Justin Salisbury about the most likely motivational
consequences of his recognition program?
 Act as a role model and help inspire employees to identify what they are passionate about at work.
 Clearly define the organization’s vision, mission and strategy as well as the goals and objectives of
each employee.
 Empower your employees to succeed and delegate challenging and meaningful work.
 Work with each employee to create their own personal development plan. Then, provide them with
coaching and mentoring and help them increase their skills and their sense of competence and
accomplishment.
 Monitor the progress of your employees towards accomplishing their goals and objectives – then
provide rewards to reinforce positive behavior

What other form of recognition should Justin offer the store managers?

 Justin should recognize and reward the company managers financially, praise and value the
manager as an effective manager and efficiently guide employees.
 He can also have more drive and should link his requirements to corporate values.

Would it be better for Justin to have a recognition program aimed directly at

 NO , Everyone should be aimed as it is a very big team effort.
