A BRIEF HISTORY OF

THE TWO NOVELS


 The novels of Dr. Jose Rizal were both
products of his inspiration to expose
what his countrymen were
experiencing under the Spanish
colonizers.
 Most parts of his novels were written
while he was in Europe.
 Ferdinand Blumentritt, Dr. Miguel
Morayta, and Francesc Pi i Margall.
FIRST NOVEL (Noli Me Tangere)
• Was published in 1887
• The purpose of novel was very merely
to raise political consciousness
concerning the current condition of
affairs in the Philippines.
• “touch me not” – uttered by Jesus Christ
to Mary Magdalene at his resurrection.
(it is written in John 20:17 in the bible)
• In his memoir, Jose Rizal dedicated
this novel to the motherland where his
most happy memories with his family
were never forgotten.
• Jose Rizal began the sequel of his
first novel on October 1887 while he
was practicing medicine in Calamba,
Laguna.
SECOND NOVEL (El Filibusterismo)
• Means “The Reign of Greed” was
revised, finalized, and refined while he
was at Biarritz, France March 29,
1891.
• He has a letter to Blumentritt….
“ I have finished my book. Ah! I have not
written it with any idea of vengeance
against my enemies, but only for the
good of those who suffer and for the
rights of Tagalog humanity, although
brown and not good-looking. (J.P.Rizal)”
• This novel is the continuation of the
journey of the main character in Noli
Me Tangere.
• El Filibusterismo dedicated to Don
Mariano Gomez, Don Jose Burgos, and
Jacinto Zamora who are also known as
the GOMBURZA – the three martyred
priest who were viictims of malicious
accusation and injustice by the Spanish
officials during their colonization in the
Philippines and were in the Philippines
and were garroted in the Bagumbayan
Field on the 17th of February, 1872.
CHARACTERS OF NOLI
ME TANGERE
CRISOSTOMO IBARRA
- also known as Juan Crisostomo Ibarra y
Magsalin
- a Filipino who studied in Europe for seven
years, the love interest of Maria Clara.

ELIAS
- is Ibarra’s mysterious friend, a fugitive and a
boatman as well.
MARIA CLARA de LOS SANTOS
- is Ibarra’s sweetheart and the fruit of Father
Damaso’s desire to Pia Alba.

PADRE DAMASO VERDOLAGAS


- is a Franciscan friar and played a significant
role in Maria Clara’s life as her biological father.

DON FILIPO LINO


- is a close relative of Ibarra and a filibuster.
LINARES
- is a distant newphew of Don Tiburcio de Espadana
who is the would-be-fiance of Maria Clara.

CAPTAIN GENERAL (no specific name)


- is the most powerful official in the Philippines, a
hater of the secular priest and corrupt officials and a
friend of Ibarra.

TARCILO AND BRUNO


- are brothers whose father was killed by Spaniards.
CAPTAIN PABLO
- is the leaders of the rebels whose family was
killed by Spaniards.

BASILIO AND CRISPIN


- are children of Sisa who suffered insanity after
losing her sons.

PEDRO
- is the irresponsible husband of Sisa who wasted
most of his time in gambling.
PADRE HERNANDO de la Sibyla
- is a Dominican friar who is being described as
short and has fair skin.

KAPITAN TIAGO
- a rich man of Binondo, the loving husband of
Dona Pia Alba and the known father of Maria Clara.

Padre Bernardo Salvi


- is a secret admirer of Maria Clara.
TENIENTE GUEVARRA
- is a Spanish Guardia civil who revealed to
Ibarra of what happened to Don Rafael.

DON ANASTACIO
- is also known as Pilosopo Tasyo who was
portayed in the novel as a pessimist, and critical
thinker which made him hated by his neighbors.

SUMMARY OF EL FILIBUSTERISMO

The protagonist of El Filibusterismo is a


jeweler named Simoun. He is the new
identity of Crisostomo Ibarra who, in the
prequel Noli, escaped from pursuing
soldiers. It is revealed that Crisostomo dug
up his buried treasure and fled to Cuba,
becoming richer and befriending Spanish
officials
