NOLI ME TANGERE

BOOK 1
 1884

Dr. Jose Rizal started to write his first novel in

title Noli Me tangere, while he was studying in
Europe.
 UNCLE TOM’S CABIN

These were written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

It inspired Dr. Rizal to prepare a novel that
would depict the miseries of his people under
the lash of Spanish.

Visited while he was in the process of working
on his novel.
Dr. Maximo Viola
–The man who saved the Noli . He is known as
the best friend of Jose Rizal in Europe.
December 1886
– Dr. Jose Rizal and Maximo viola celebrated
the Christmas together.
 FEBRUARY 21, 1887

- The Noli was finally finished and ready for

printing.
 BERLINER BUCHDRUCKREI-ACTION-
GESSELSCHAFT

– a printing shop which charge the lowest rate, 5,300 pesos for
2,000 copies of the novel.

March 21, 1887

– the noli me tangere came off the press.
 MARCH 29, 1887

Rizal gave Viola the galley proofs of the Noli

carefully rolled the pen that he used in writing it
and a complimentary copy, with the following
inscription:
“ To my dear friend, Maximo Viola the first to
read and appreciate my work – Jose Rizal “
 The title Noli Me Tangere is a Latin Phrase that
Rizal took from the Bible, meaning “ Touch Me Not
“ in Gaspel of St. John 20:17
• Noli Me Tangere in English is “ The Social Cancer
“ it is the idea of Charles Derbyshire.
 THE CHARACTERS OF NOLI ME
TANGERE
Crisostomo Ibarra – also known in his full name as Juan Crisostomo
Ibarra y Magsalin, a Filipino who studied in Europe for 7 years, the love
interest of Maria Clara. Son of the deceased Don Rafael Ibarra.

Elias – Ibarra’s mysterious friend, a master boater, also a fugitive. He

wants to revolutionize his country.
Maria Clara - Maria Clara de los Santos, Ibarra's sweetheart; the
legitimate daughter of Father Damaso and Pia Alba.
Father Damaso – also known in his full name as Damaso
Verdolagas, a friar and Maria Clara’s biological father.
Captain Tiago – also known in his full name as Don Santiago de
los Santos, the known father of Maria Clara but not the biological
father.
Sisa – the mother of Basilio and Crispin who became
insane after losing his sons.
Pilosopong Tasyo – also known as Don Anastacio,
portrayed in the novel as pessimistic, and mad by his
neighbors.
Dona Victorina – Victorina de los Reyes de Espadaña,
a woman who poses herself as a Peninsulares.
Pedro – abusive husband of Sisa who loved cockfighting.
Don Rafael Ibarra – known in the plot as a concerned citizen
and property owner who was a father of Crisostomo Ibarra.
The School Master – A teacher at San Diego who’s view in the
novel represented the weak and useless education in the
Philippines.
Tandang Pablo – The leader of the rebels, whose family was
destroyed because of the Spaniards.
Basilio – the elder son of Sisa.
Crispin – the younger son of Sisa who died from the
punishment of the soldiers from the false accusation of
stealing an amount of money.
Padre Sibyla – Hernando de la Sibyla, a Filipino friar. He
is described as short and has fair skin.
Padre Salvi – also known in his full name as Bernardo
Salvi, a secret admirer of Maria Clara.
The Alferez – chief of the Guardia Civil, mortal enemy of
the priests for power in San Diego.
Don Tiburcio – Spanish husband of Doña Victorina who was limp and
submissive to his wife; he also pretended to be a doctor.
Doña Consolacion – wife of the Alferez,another woman who passed
herself as Peninsular.
Captain General (no specific name) – The most powerful official in the
Philippines; a hater of secular priests and corrupt officials; and a
friend of Ibarra.

-Rizal begun his second novel , while practicing

medicine in Calamba.

-he completed the book in Barret France.
SEPTEMBER 18,1891

- The novel was published in Ghent Belgium.

Valentin Ventura
- He lent money to Rizal . The savior of El
Filibusterismo.
• Rizal gave the original manuscript to Valentin
Ventura, with the autograph of Rizal.

JACINTO ZAMORA,

Rizal wrote El Filibusterismo as a dedication to the

three martyr priests, Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos,
and Jacinto Zamora, who expressed the belief that
their treatment and deaths at the hands of the Spanish
authorities were unjust.
