DELINTING OF COTTONSEED

DELINTING MACHINE

DILUTE ACID DELINTING
 Most efficient and environmentally friendly
method
 A precisely controlled amount of specially
formulated sulfuric acid is applied to the fuzzy
seed in the Stainless Steel Reactor.
 By limiting the acid applied, less fuel is used in
the drying phase, noxious residue is held to a
minimum and production of black seed is
enhanced.
HCL ACID DELINTING
 More primitive method
 Fuzzy cottonseed is dried and warmed in a
continuous drier and measured into a seed
charger.
 The seed charger conveys the seed into the pre-
heated and rotating delinting drum where
vaporized and pressurized HCL gas is injected.
 The HCL gas reacts with the lint and weakens the
fiber.
HCL ACID DELINTING
 Once exposed to the HCL gas, seed is
transferred to a set of buffing drums that tumble
the seed as the reaction occurs.
 Lint is removed in the buffers through a
mechanical scrubbing action that separates the
weakened fibers from the hard seed coat.
 Some of the separated lint is pulled from the
buffing screens pneumatically and transferred to
cyclones or a filter bag house.
HCL ACID DELINTING

 The remainder of the lint collects in the hopper

below the buffering reels.
 This lint is collected and transferred to the trash
bin by screw conveyors or an air system.
 Delinted seed from the buffers is neutralized with
the ammonia before processing in the
conditioning and treating equipment.
MECHANICAL BRUSH DELINTING

 Performed in (e.g. L.T. Kincer Co. patented

KINCO Brush Delinter).
 As production rates are significantly lower, the
residual lint is not destroyed in the process.
 Delinting occurs as the fuzzy seed is scrubbed
through the interior of a perforated screen
cylinder.
MECHANICAL BRUSH DELINTING

 The scrubbing action of the interior brushes

rubs the seed across the perforations allowing
the airflow to remove the lint from the machine.
 Mechanical Brush Delinting requires more
energy than Acid Delinting and is not as
complete and each seed will show some lint
remnants at each end of the oval shaped seed.
MECHANICAL BRUSH DELINTING

 Due to the abrasive action of the brushes, care

must be taken to prevent overheating the seed
and/or damaging the seed coat.
 Mechanical Brush Delinting does not use any
chemicals and can produce a small quantity of
useable low grade lint as a by-product.
