What is Figurative Language?

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

• Def: A set of literary techniques that enhances writing by


adding new meaning and context beyond the literal facts.

• When you use a word or phrase that doesn’t have its normal
everyday, literal meaning

• Non-Literal use of Language/Figure of speech


Literal vs Figurative (Non-
Literal)
•Literal : Red, Beautiful, Petals, Sweet
Scent

•Figurative/ Non-Literal : This rose is as


red as a shiny apple and as beautiful as
the sunrise. Its petals smile to welcome
the morning. Its scent is as sweet as a
baby
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
• It refers to the colors we use to amplify our
writing. It takes an ordinary piece of writing
and dresses it up beautifully

• It’s a way to engage the readers, guiding them


through your writing with a creative tone.

• A Simile is a figurative term that compares two unlike things using words

• “LIKE” OR “AS”
SIMILE EXAMPLES:-

Cool as a Cucumber

Smart as a Whip

I am as hungry as a Ravenous Wolf

His feet are as big as a Skateboard


METAPHOR
• A metaphor compares two unlike things, saying that they are alike.

• It doesn’t use “Like” or “As” instead says one thing is the other thing

• Love is a Rose
• My mother is a mystery
• Time is money
• Her heart is gold
• Life is a game
