changes are accepted by people without opposition or
resistance.
◦ Cultural factors and economic factors also play a central role
in resistance.
◦ Not all changes are accepted by society.
REASONS FOR RESISTANCE
ATTITUDE AND VALUES: Each society has its own attitudes and values.
When the innovations and changes contradicts or oppose these attitudes and values it leads
to resistance. For e.g. preference for male child and large families have come in way of
FAMILY PLANNING.

VESTED INTERESTS: The costs of social change are never evenly distributed.
Most social changes carry a threat to some vested interests. When individuals and group feel
that a change endagers their interests, or threaten their rights, they resist changes. For eg
landed people opposed land reforms as they lose their lands.
ROLE OF THE AGENT OF CHANGE: The identity of the originator greatly affects
acceptance or rejection. Innovations which are first adopted by persons with higher status and
power are likely to be accepted whereas changes adopted by low status persons will not be adopted
or accepted easily.

COSTS OF CHANGE : Not only does change disrupt the existing culture and destroy
cherished sentiments and values, but it also involves same specific costs. Most innovations require
some modification of the existing culture. For e.g. unigauge system of train in India.
DEMONSTRABILITY OF INNOVATIONS: An innovation is
most quickly accepted when its usefulness can be easily demonstrated. In
some areas of life the efforts of social change cannot be easily
demonstrated.
 For e.g. the good effects of small family cannot be easily demonstrated.
When demonstrability of innovations is difficult people show resistance.
