RIME-221 Introduction to

Mechatronics Design
Fundamentals

Lecture 1
Introduction: What is Mechatronics?
What are Mechatronic Systems?
◦ Mecha(nical) (Elec)Tronics… But is that all?

Mechatronics is a branch of engineering that focuses on designing,

manufacturing and maintaining products that have both mechanical
and electronic components.
The term was coined in 1969 by Tetsuro Mori a Senior Engineer in the
Japanese company Yaskawa to describe the synergy that exists
between electrical control systems and the mechanical machines they
regulate.
Since then, the meaning of the term has broadened to include the
integration of multiple other disciplines, including computer
engineering, systems engineering and programming.

Introduction: Why Mechatronics?
In many industries today, engineers have to work in cross-discipline,
collaborative teams in order to ensure that the complex, highly
integrated systems they are designing will run smoothly.
As a design philosophy, mechatronics values systems thinking and an
interdisciplinary approach to problem solving.
Analogy: Drinkable Water + Heat + Cream + Coffee + Sugar =
1. Cappuccino
2. Latte
3. Espresso …

We need to know how to mix them. What else may you require?

Multidisciplinary Design
Brainstorm: What does design even mean?
How to go from: ‘How do I solve this problem?’ To ‘Here’s an
implemented solution’
The Designer of a Mechatronics System often has to consider
certain trade-offs between electrical, mechanical and algorithmic
complexity.
Multiple solutions and some solutions work better than others.
