We don’t use the article (a, an) before ADJECTIVES alone!

Job status adjectives:

We use the article (a, an) with ADJECTIVES + NOUNS!

I am a retired woman -> This is correct because: - we use the adjective with a noun

• Pretty The girl is a pretty. -> A pretty girl.

• Red The car is a red. -> A red car.

• Big This cake is a big. -> A big cake.


• Article + NOUN = correct (This is a flower)

• Article + Adjective = incorrect (The flower is a beautiful)

• Article + Adjective + NOUN = correct (This is a beautiful flower)
