THERMODYNAMICS
What is Thermodynamics(TD)?
THERMODYNAMICS THERME+DYNAMICS
(Heat) (Power)
*Man’s early effort to convert heat into power.
TD is a branch of science that deals with energy & its transformation.
What is energy?
The ability to cause any change.
Energy:
In physics, the capacity for doing work. It may exist in potential, kinetic, thermal,
electrical, chemical, nuclear, or other various forms.
Concepts & Terminologies

surface.

Concepts & Terminologies
• System : A quantity of matter or region in space bounded by some closed
surface.
• Surrounding : Everything external to system.
• Universe : System+ Surrounding
Boundary: The surface ( real or imaginary) that separates the
system from it’s surrounding.
Fixed( rigid) Boundary.
Movable Boundary.
Dia- thermal ( heat transfer).
Adiabatic ( no heat transfer).
Classification of Thermodynamics System

• Closed System( Control Mass System):NO MASS TRANSFER but

ENERGY across system’s boundary.
Open System( Control Volume System):BOTH MASS &
ENERGY TRANSFER across system’s boundary.
Isolated System: Neither MASS nor ENERGY
crosses the boundary.

Assignment:
Example of two open system, two closed system
and two isolated thermodynamic system from
our daily life?
