Language Focus: Gerunds and infinitives
You will watch a video about Dylan’s lifestyle and habits. Read the questions, watch and
answer.
Do you know the name for the two types of verb forms you have identified?
Look at the pair of sentences. Which describes a past action? What is the time frame of
the other sentence?
Look at the pair of sentences. Which describes stopping an action to do another action?
What does the other sentence describe?
Dylan now takes vitamins every day. He remembers taking his vitamins earlier.
He must remember to take his vitamins again tomorrow.
Dylan first met his wife in a park where he used to stop to smoke on his way to
work. He has now stopped smoking because it is bad for his health.
Dylan’s wife likes to run on the beach, but he likes running in the park. He prefers
to wake up before dawn and she prefers waking up when it is light outside.

- Student A: Look at the people in the pictures or people you know and choose: 1 you’d like you
work with and 1 you’d like to be friends with. Mention:
- 2 personality traits each person has
- why these traits make you want to work with them or be their friend.
- Student B: Ask your partner 1 question about what they have or don’t have in common with the
people they chose.
- Student A: answer the question friendly/ sociable/hard-working

- Then switch roles.

Student A: I’d like to be friends with the girl who’s rock climbing because she looks
adventurous and active and I like doing adventurous things too. I’d like to work with the
man in the yellow suit because he looks creative and confident and that is super useful in
the kind of work that I do. I work in advertising and clients prefer to work with creative and
confident people.
Student B: What do you have in common with them? friendly/
Student A: I have a lot in common with the girl because I do extreme sports as well. I like sociable/
feeling the adrenalin and she probably does too. What I have in common with the man is hard-working
that I am creative. I’m always thinking of new ideas for advertising products. talkative/
Student B: What don’t you have in common? extroverted/
What the man and I don’t have in common is that I’m not as confident. I don’t think I’d dedicated
wear something so bright. And he looks a little bit vain taking selfies like that.
