TOPIC: Wooden Columns

Sample Problem # 1 :
A timber column of square cross section has a length of 3m and a dimension
of 140mmx140mm. It is hinged so that K = 1.0. The relevant code on
compressive stress Fc is given on the specifications and also a table of
timber with their corresponding working stresses for visually stress-graded
seasoned Apitong with 80% stress grade.

a. Classify the column.

b. What is the allowable compressive stress?
c. Solve for the allowable axial load.

Fc = 9.56 MPa

Sample Problem # 2 :
A timber column 7.0m long and is literally supported at a point 3m from the
bottom carries an axial load of 260 kN. If the allowable compressive stress
parallel to the grain is 10.34 MPa and modulus of elasticity of wood is
13800 MPa.

a. Compute the max. limit of the slenderness ratio which would indicate its
limit between a long column & intermediate column.
b. What size of column should be used?
c. What is the difference between the capacity of the selected section to the
required load?

TOPIC: Tapered Columns

• Sample Problem # 1:
A tapered column has an unsupported height of 3.6m with a buckling
factor Ke = 1.0. It has an upper diameter of 250mm and a base
diameter of 400mm. Allowable compressive stress parallel to grain is
12.4 MPa and modulus of elasticity of wood is 11000 MPa.

a. Solve for the slenderness ratio of the tapered column.

b. Solve for the allowable compressive stress (Fc’)
c. Solve the safe axial capacity of the tapered column.

TOPIC: Composite Columns

Sample Problem # 1:
A composite column 3m long is made up of two kinds of timber, one is
made of Apitong, having allowable compressive stress parallel to grain of 10.34
MPa and modulus of elasticity of 13800 MPa, while the other is made of Yakal,
having an allowable compressive stress parallel to grain of 12.40 MPa and
modulus of elasticity of 17240 MPa. The sections are placed side by side and is
subject to an axial load of 265 kN.

a. Determine the size of Yakal and Apitong if each will carry equal load.
b. What load will Yakal carry of they will have the same cross sectional area?
c. What load will Apitong carry if they will have the same cross sectional area?
